history

In ancient times, the area was part of the Noricum province .

On May 12, 1826, the Kerschbaumer family, who lived in a hut on Sattelweg, fell victim to the notorious Nikolaus Schmidhofer alias Holzknechtseppl . He was the leader of the Stradafüßler band of robbers and was sometimes able to live with the family with some of his cronies. After he and one of his men were provoked by the Wegmacher's wife on one of these occasions, the two robbers murdered the parents Franz and Josefa Kerschbaumer and their daughter Maria (between 12 and 16 years old depending on the source) and set the family home on fire on. There was also a fourth fatality with the foster daughter Juliane (between 3 and 10 years old, according to the source) who probably burned alive because the robbers had forgotten it, as Schmidhofer later admitted during interrogation.

In the early 1920s, the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein worked for some time as a primary school teacher in Trattenbach.

In the last weeks of the Second World War , the Red Army tried to penetrate the Semmering into northeast Styria in order to stab in the back of the German armed forces fighting on the border . This could be prevented by alarm groups, which at the end of April 1945 were combined in the 9th Mountain Division . This defensive action also led to fighting in the vicinity of the village.

On January 1, 1971, the communities of Raach am Hochgebirge and Trattenbach zu Otterthal were incorporated. On January 1st, 1985 these two communities became independent again. The reason was a finding by the Constitutional Court .
