history

The name of the community goes back to a pilgrims' hostel , which Ottokar III built here in 1160 for those who want to cross the Semmering. The earliest written document is from 1165/66 and reads "hospitalem". It is based on the Old High German hospital hus (hostel, economy). In the past, the region was repeatedly the scene of bloody clashes, for example at the time of the Turkish wars , when the place suffered severe damage from the Ottoman army.

Iron mining in particular was the region's main source of income for a long time, but in 1882 it had to be stopped due to excessive competitive pressure.

The new railway line over the Semmering Pass, which was previously difficult to cross, led to a massive boom in tourism from the 19th century.
