Population development

history

View of Thörl, around 1850

Settlements in the area around Thörl are likely to have existed as early as the Neolithic Age. Around 600 AD, Slavic settlers moved to the area, as can be seen in some place names today. Bavarians immigrated during the 8th century.

1103 gave Duke Heinrich III. of Carinthia, the Aflenz Valley , in which Thörl is also located, the St. Lambrecht Abbey . Palbersdorf first appeared in a document in 1342, Thörl (as toer in der aynoed ; Thörl in der Einöd) in 1345. The area was then still known as Einöd . The roadblock that gave the place its name already existed at that time. The area name Hinterberg has been known since 1253.

Iron production began in Thörl in the 14th century. However, since the valley in Thörl was too narrow, residential construction concentrated on Palbersdorf.

In 1849 Thörl was integrated into the community of Aflenz, in 1915 it was to be divided up again due to divergent interests, which was postponed to 1919 due to the First World War.

In 1893 the Thörlerbahn was opened, which connected Kapfenberg with Turnau . The local iron industry in particular benefited greatly from this. An extension to the Mariazellerbahn was also planned in order to connect the Southern Railway with the Western Railway , but this was never realized.

In 1945, at the end of the Second World War , soldiers of the Red Army marched in and stayed until Thörl fell into the British zone of occupation that same year.

In 1955 the communities of Thörl and Fölz merged, and Thörl was also given the right to use a coat of arms.

In 1959, passenger traffic on the railway line was discontinued, five years later the section from Seebach to Seewiesen, a district of Turnau, was closed, and in 1990 the section from Aflenz to Seebach. In 1991 the Thörlerbahn Association started a museum railway project, which was well received. However, when the iron industry slid into bankruptcy in 1995 because of a bank failure, the operator of the line, the Styrian State Railways , lost the largest freight customer and had to cease operations. The club was then allowed to use the route until 1997. The tracks of the Thörlerbahn were dismantled in 2003/04, from Thörl to Kapfenberg the route was replaced by a cycle path.

In 1994 the community was elevated to a market community because of its services, such as the construction of a secondary school, an indoor swimming pool and community paths.

religion

For the evangelical community there was a preaching station in Thörl at the beginning of the 20th century, and it was consecrated on June 29, 1914.

The Catholic Church was consecrated on June 21, 1964, and the Aflenz branch in Thörl was raised to the status of an independent parish. The site for the church was made by Johann III. Donated by Pengg. Until then, the Barbara Chapel in Thörl Castle served as a church service room.

2015

As a result of the municipal merger, all municipal councils lost their functions on December 31, 2014. Until April 24, 2015, a government commissioner with two advisory boards took over the management of the community based on a modest appointment by the state of Styria.

After the municipal council election on March 22, 2015, Günther Wagner was elected first mayor of the new market town of Thörl at the constituent meeting of the municipal council on April 24, 2015. Margit Peßl was elected deputy mayor and Martina Krenn was elected community treasurer.

The municipality of Thörl has 15 members:

coat of arms

Two of the three predecessor communities each had a community coat of arms. Due to the amalgamation of the municipalities, these lost their official validity on January 1, 2015, the new award for the merged municipality has not yet taken place (status: end of 2017).
The Thörl coat of arms, awarded in 1955, made reference to the Schachenstein ruin that dominates the townscape and the great importance of the Thörler works in the metalworking industry.

Regional policy

Thörl is a member of the Regionext-Kleinregion Hochschwab Süd , founded December 2, 2009 , and of the LEADER region Mariazellerland-Mürz Valley .
