Wartberg im Mürz Valley is a former municipality and village with 1955 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the Austrian state of Styria . As part of the municipal structural reform in Styria , the independent municipality was merged with the previously independent municipalities of Veitsch and Mitterdorf in Mürz Valley on January 1, 2015 . The resulting new community is called Sankt Barbara im Mürz Valley .

Wartberg im Mürzzuschlag lies on the Mürz , a north-eastern tributary of the Mur in the judicial district of Mürzzuschlag and in the political district of Bruck-Mürzzuschlag in northeast Styria .

history
Wartberg was first mentioned in a document in 1158 as Wartperch . The local community as an autonomous body was established in 1850 and comprised the cadastral communities of Wartberg, Scheibsgraben , Mitterdorf and Lutschaun . In 1871 the company Vogel & Noot , which still exists today, was founded as a company for the production of iron, steel and other metal goods.
In 1906 Mitterdorf and Lutschaun left the Wartberg municipal association. After the " Anschluss of Austria " in 1938, the community became part of the Reichsgau Steiermark, from 1945 to 1955 it was part of the British zone of occupation in Austria.

The Wartberg train station is located on the southern railway in the Mürz Valley. Numerous regional trains stop in the direction of Bruck an der Mur or Mürzzuschlag . However, trains to Leoben , Friesach , Neumarkt , Unzmarkt , Graz and Spielfeld-Straß are often extended.

Until the end of 2014, the mayor was Wolfgang Putsche ( SPÖ ), who also headed the office. Until then, Georg Taufner (SPÖ) was vice mayor.
