Karl Skala (born February 3, 1924 in Wartberg im Mürz Valley ; † December 31, 2006 in Graz ) was an Austrian homeland poet.

Life

After leaving school, Karl Skala worked as a lathe operator at Eisenwerk Vogel & Noot , where he retired after 43 years of service. During the Second World War he was used as a tank grenadier in Russia and then a year as a prisoner of war. In 1943 he wrote his first poem A Good Comrade , with which he became famous. In 1956 he published his first volume of poetry, which was followed by five more. Many of his poems served as the textual basis for compositions that were also recorded on record, including the cantata Unterwegs durch Zeit und Leben (1979) and the mass Everything is in your hand (1991) by Gerhard Track and the Mürzallied by Franz Schöggl . In 1981 he was awarded the poet's stone shield from the Dichterstein Offenhausen association, which was banned in 1999 because of National Socialist re- employment .
