The Lichtenegg castle ruins are the ruins of a hilltop castle above Wartberg in the municipality of St. Barbara in the Mürz Valley in Styria ( Austria ).

history

At the beginning of the late Middle Ages around 1290, the residence of a petty aristocrat or a farmhouse may have stood on the site of the castle. The owner paid interest to the Kindberg lordship . In 1346 Hans Liechtenecker is mentioned as the owner, but it was not until 1395 that his grandson of the same name, a member of the lower nobility, received permission to convert the farm or residence into a castle. The fortified defense structure secured access to the Scheibsgraben in the Aflenz basin . The Liechtenecker family died out in 1425 and a relative, Albrecht the Aflenzer, took over the rule. Ulrich Reisacher's sons were born in 1443 by King Friedrich III. enfeoffed with the castle, but the rule was sold to the Stadler in the first quarter of the 16th century due to inheritance disputes. In the Turkish War of 1529 the castle was not besieged, although devastation and deportations had taken place in the area. The other owners were the trades Sebald Pögl, who invested in the defense of the plant, and after 1600 Leopold Freiherr von Herberstein . The manor at that time comprised around 200 hectares of land and around 150 subjects.

After Leopold von Herberstein had to leave Styria for religious reasons, he previously sold the castle to Anna Catherina Eggsin, whose daughter Anna Catharina Freiin von Prankh sold Lichtenegg Castle in 1677 to Johann Ferdinand Zehentner von Zehentgrub, whose widow it to Johann Rudolf Freiherr von in 1692 Stadl, later bought by Maria Regina von Stubenberg , but the medium-sized castle was only inhabited by administrators because the rulers had given up the castle and moved into the valley. The other owners in the 18th century were Carl Josef Anton von Crollolanza and from 1757 Anton Graf Inzaghi, who moved his administration to Oberkindberg, whereupon the castle was uninhabited and fell into disrepair. After the city fire of Bruck in 1792 Inzaghi allowed the residents to use parts of the castle as building material for the reconstruction of the city. Only a few responded to the offer, but the building fabric was nevertheless reduced. The ruins were further damaged by an earthquake in 1855 . Only two years later, in 1857, it came into the possession of the Counts of Attems , but it was only since 1932, and especially since 1958, that the castle association, which is also the owner of the castle, has been maintaining it. The curtain wall had to be torn down in 1953. 1980 1990 are created in keep the local museum .
