As part of the municipal structural reform in Styria. The municipality, which was newly founded on January 1, 2015, emerged from the merger of three municipalities that were independent until the end of 2014:

The basis for this was the Styrian Municipal Structural Reform Act - StGsrG.

The new community is named after the patron saint of miners, Barbara of Nicomedia . A Barbara church was built in 1986 in what is now the Mitterdorf district.
