Helmut Brenner

Helmut Brenner (born January 1, 1957 in Mürzzuschlag , Styria ; † February 17, 2017 in Graz , Styria) was an Austrian ethnomusicologist .

Life

Helmut Brenner initially studied music at the University of Music and Performing Arts (today University of Music and Performing Arts ) in Graz. Here he obtained the artistic diploma for trumpet in 1981, as well as the state teaching qualification in 1982. He graduated in 1984 with a Magister (Mag. Art.). From 1975 to 1986 he worked as a teacher at music schools.

From 1986 Helmut Brenner studied musicology and history at the universities of Graz and Vienna. In 1995 he completed his studies with the doctorate to Dr. phil. from. Since 1987, Brenner has had lectureships at the universities of Graz, Mexico City, Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Innsbruck and Saarbrücken, among others.

In 2000 he undertook a mission as a consultant to various countries in Central and South America on behalf of UNESCO to investigate the history and current situation of the marimba traditions in ten Latin American countries. In 2004 he was awarded the Venia legendi ( habilitation ) for the subjects of ethnomusicology and popular music by the Saarland University in Saarbrücken with a thesis on "Marimbas in Latin America".

Until his death he was a senior scientist at the Institute for Ethnomusicology at the University of Art and Design Graz and also took teaching positions at the inter-university degree in musicology at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, the Karl-Franzens University Graz and at the Universidad de Ciencias y Artes de Chiapas UNICACH true in Tuxtla Gutiérrez (Mexico).

Brenner was one of the few ethnomusicologists in German-speaking countries who had a habilitation and who was primarily concerned with Latin America in both research and teaching. Another focus of teaching was folk song research.
