Mitterdorf im Mürzzuschlag is a former market town with 2,420 inhabitants (January 1, 2020) in the judicial district of Mürzzuschlag and in the political district of Bruck-Mürzzuschlag in Styria . Mitterdorf was an independent market town until the end of 2014 . As part of the municipal structural reform in Styria, the new municipality of Sankt Barbara im Mürzal has merged since 2015 with the previously independent municipalities of Veitsch and Wartberg im Mürz Valley .

Mitterdorf is located in the Mürz Valley, about 13 km southwest of Mürzzuschlag . In the south are the Fischbach Alps .

history

The earliest written document is from 1139 and reads "Mitterendorf". The name goes back to Old High German mittar (middle, in the middle).

The local parishes as autonomous corporations emerged in 1850. The cadastral parishes of Wartberg, Scheibsgraben, Mitterdorf and Lutschaun formed the Wartberg municipal association. In 1906 Mitterdorf and Lutschaun left the Wartberg municipal association. After the annexation of Austria in 1938, the community became part of the Reichsgau Steiermark, from 1945 to 1955 it was part of the British zone of occupation in Austria.

Mitterdorf is on the Semmering expressway S 6 and on the Südbahn .

environmental Protection

Mitterdorf in Mürz Valley was the first municipality in Austria to use modern LED technology in street lighting. For the retrofitting, the community was awarded a prize in the ideas competition of the Raiffeisenbank Mittleres Mürzal.

politics

Walter Berger ( SPÖ ) was the mayor until the end of 2014 , and Renate Planka (SPÖ) was the deputy mayor. The council sat until then consist of:

  • 12 members of the SPÖ
  • 3 members of the ÖVP
