About the concept, location, landscape and structure

Sankt Marein and Sankt Lorenzen in Mürz Valley

In general, Mürz Valley is the name of the entire Mürz Valley. The two source streams, the Kalte Mürz and the Stille Mürz , arise in the area between Mariazell and Schwarzau , the Stille Mürz in Lower Austria. The Mürz arises at the confluence of the two source streams on the state border with Styria and initially flows southwards. This breakthrough valley through the main mass of the northern Alps around Neuberg and Mürzsteg is specifically called Upper Mürz Valley , or also Neubergertal .

Mürz Valley in the narrower sense is usually understood to mean the valley on the lower Mürz, which bends sharply to the southeast at Mürzzuschlag and goes to the Mur near Bruck . This wide trough valley is part of the Mur-Mürz furrow between the Northern Alps and the Central Alps and continues eastward in the Fröschnitztal valley to the Semmering . This Talung is the south by the Fischbach Alps and the north by the Mürztaler Alps limited (while from the mountains to the upper Mürz of mürzsteg alps speaks).

This valley is divided into two sub-areas. The valley of the Mürz only widens after the city of Mürzzuschlag. In the east lies the Middle Mürz Valley , which stretches from Mürzzuschlag to the Enge von Wartberg , a short valley breakthrough on an Inselberg ( Wartbergkogel ). Here are Langenwang , Krieglach and St. Barbara - Mitterndorf . After the breakthrough, the basin-like Lower Mürz Valley follows , which widens from Mürzhofen , as the core of the Mürz Valley area, with Kindberg still in the area of the Talenge, St. Lorenzen , St. Marein and the town of Kapfenberg , the largest town next to Bruck. Bruck itself forms the junction of the Upper and Middle Mutal with the Lower Mürz Valley.

In addition to this natural spatial structure, there is also one in which the entire area above Wartberg is called Upper Mürz Valley and below Lower Mürz Valley , which corresponds to their two local centers, Bruck-Kapfenberg and Mürzzuschlag, as in the current name of the district, Bruck- Mürzzuschlag , can be found (former districts of Bruck an der Mur and Mürzzuschlag ).

The Mürz valley belongs to the Hochsteiermark of Upper Styria .

geology

The Mürz Valley is part of the Noric Depression , to which the Aflenz Basin also belongs here in the area (part of the Murparalleltal train ). In the north and south of the valley, young tertiary sediments of the inner-alpine Tertiary are stored , which are bound to the Mur-Mürz furrow , a tectonic weak zone of the earth's crust (tectonic lineament ). The terraces in the valley area, made of sand and gravel, have a small thickness of up to ten meters; the strip of the floodplain varies in width. A closed groundwater body runs within the Quaternary sediments , which is connected to the Mürz in many places and is fed by the mountain ranges.

climate

The climate is inner-alpine with a tendency towards low precipitation due to the mountain shielding on all sides, but not so pronounced compared to the Upper Mur Valley due to the expanse and increasing gentleness of the mountain ridges towards the east. The annual precipitation increases significantly to the east, Bruck has about 800 mm, Mürzzuschlag a good 1000 mm, Mürzsteg in the upper Mürz Valley already over 1200 mm. The valley is also prone to inversion , especially in winter, sometimes with extremely little wind and only poorly ventilated, and therefore often has fog; there is also frequent high fog with around 80 days per year. Therefore, in terms of the duration of the sunshine, the higher altitudes are favored, the valley floor has only between 25 and 30%, the low mountain range from 1000 m above sea level 35–40%.

History and infrastructure

The Mürz Valley is one of the most important industrial regions in Austria . This was influenced by the abundance of water and forests as a source of energy, and in particular by the nearby Erzberg . The steel manufacturer Böhler-Uddeholm AG , but also the Norske Skog paper mill and other large corporations have settled here.

traffic

Traffic connection the valley serves as a connecting shaft between the Obersteiermark and Vienna basin, through the Muerztal leading Semmeringschnellstraße  S6 to about Semmering (and on to the motorway  A2), parallel to the Südbahn , the Wien with Bruck and further comprising Graz and Klagenfurt connects .
