Noric depression

Coordinates: 47 ° 15 '  N , 14 ° 55'  O As Norische sink is a running from west to east in Geology and Geography longitudinal valley in the eastern Alps designated. Several inner-alpine basins are lined up like a chain here. The Noric Depression extends from Salzburg via Styria to Lower Austria . The valley train accompanies youalongthe Mur-Mürz-Furche for long stretches about 10 kilometers to the north, which is why it is also known as the Murparalleltal , but towards the east the Semmering line and the Noric valley intersect , while Mürz valley valleys are geologically part of the Noric valley.

The sediments deposited here in the Neogene form a flat, relatively soft surface structure. This made this depression along the courses of the Mürz and Mur rivers important as an Alpine settlement area. The name "Noric Sink" is derived from the name of the former Celtic kingdom Noricum , which was located in the Eastern Alps. The basins used to be of economic importance because of their coal deposits.

The following basins in the series from west to east belong to the Noric depression:

Between Lungau and Semmering these basins form the Murparalleltal . It is not a closed valley train and exposes the following mountain groups:
