history

Rothenfels Castle and the town of Oberwölz on a painting in the Fürstengang in Freising

Duke Albrecht I allowed the market to be fortified with a curtain wall in 1298, and Oberwölz was elevated to the status of a town in 1305. The city owed its earlier importance to its role as an iron transshipment point, as well as mining and good mountain passes. The city wall with its defensive towers is well preserved from this period, and the town looks like a village today.

The political municipality of Oberwölz was established in 1849/50. The cadastral municipality of Oberwölz was separated from this original municipality of Oberwölz in 1899 and constituted as an independent municipality of Stadt Oberwölz . The rest of the original community was given the name Umgebung Oberwölz . From this in 1927 the community of Schönberg (now Schönberg-Lachtal ) was separated.

Above the city is the privately owned Rothenfels Castle . From 1007 to 1803 the Wölzer Valley belonged to the Freising Monastery .
