history
Niederwölz was first mentioned in a document in 1234, the parish church in 1335.

Population development
According to the 2001 census, the community had 623 inhabitants, 608 of them (97.6%) with Austrian citizenship. 95.3% of the population professed to be part of the Roman Catholic Church, 1.9% belonged to the Protestant Church, and 2.2% were without religious beliefs.

- Maxlaunmarkt : In Niederwölz every year in October there is a market event that has been held since 1536. Between 70,000 and 80,000 visitors visit the business fair, where local businesspeople present their products (mainly agricultural machinery and agricultural equipment) and services. In addition, the Maxlaunmarkt includes an amusement park with a marquee and grocer's stalls.
- The traditional Freyungsaustrag on Maxlaunmarkt, a procession of market rights since the 17th century, was included in the list of intangible cultural heritage in Austria by UNESCO in 2013 .
