The intangible cultural heritage in Austria is documented in the national directory of the Austrian Commission for UNESCO . As of September 13, 2017, there were 103 entries in the directory.

Intangible cultural heritage in Austria

In 2003, as part of the 32nd General Assembly of UNESCO, the Convention for the Preservation of Intangible Cultural Heritage was adopted, supplementing the earlier Convention on Intellectual Cultural Heritage . It came into force in April 2006, Austria has been a contracting state since July 9, 2009 (ratification document deposited in Paris on April 8, Austria is the 112th member state to the Convention), and in March 2010 began to draw up a national register of intangible cultural heritage .

For the implementation of the convention, the National Agency for Intangible Cultural Heritage was set up within the Austrian Commission for UNESCO on January 1, 2006 in order to accompany the ratification process . When Austria acceded to the convention in 2009, it was entrusted with the creation of a national register of the intangible cultural heritage in Austria. All recorded elements are accessible in an online database . The National Agency endeavors to ensure respect for and promote awareness of the importance of the intangible cultural heritage. It is the interface for national and international cooperation and a platform for interdisciplinary dialogue.

It is located in Vienna, in the 1st district, Universitätsstrasse 5 at the headquarters of the Austrian UNESCO Commission. After initially being located on the website www.kulturleben.at, the culture platform of the Federal Ministry for Education, Science and Culture , it was later given its own website.

G  Sep 2012 Fasnacht Nassereith - Schellerlaufen Tyrol The Nassereith Fasnacht, also known as "Schellerlauf" (Schellerlauf) since 1951, is a custom that takes place every three years in Nassereith , Imst district, on one day between Epiphany (January 6th) and Ash Wednesday. The focus is on the move, which is characterized by a splendid color and typical wooden larvae. Exactly handed down rules and the knowledge about the production of masks, costumes and utensils are passed on from generation to generation. A carnival committee has been elected to organize the organization every six years since 1923.
H  Sep 2012 Reverse glass painting in Sandl Upper Austria As a result of the immigration of North Bohemian specialists in glass refinement, reverse glass painting came to Buchers and Sandl in the Mühlviertel around 1760 , which, together with the Waldviertel and South Bohemia, is still known today for its glass refinement. The good availability of the raw materials wood and quartz sand favored the development of reverse glass painting. In Sandl the images were produced in the surrounding glassworks and in-house commercial, hawked at fairs and places of pilgrimage and Kraxenträgern exported to all countries of the Danube monarchy. Today there is one full-time and several part-time reverse glass painter in Sandl.

D.  March 2013 Pinzgauer pomace dance of the Salzburg ALPINIA Salzburg The Pinzgauer Tresterertanz is a special regional form of the Schön perchtenlauf . The round dance with hopping and stomping steps and typical costumes is performed annually in the Pinzgau region of Salzburg on January 5th, the Perchten evening before the Epiphany, when it is dark as a circulating custom from house to house. The group of dancers is accompanied by musicians. The visit of the pomace is an honor and a good omen for the new year. Discovered in Krimml around 1909/10, performed from 1912 and recorded for the first time in 1942. The word pomace ('stamping, mashing in') goes back to the practice of leaking the grapes.
