The Steyrer Kripperl is a traditional stick puppet theater in the Innerberger Stadel , Steyr , Grünmarkt 26.

history

Around the middle of the 19th century there were two hiking cribs in the Steyr area, from which today's Steyr crib is likely to have emerged. Parts of it were in 1905 in the Gasthaus zur Sense in Sierningerstrasse. After this nativity play was transferred to the Heimatschutz Association (later the Heimatpflege Association) in 1914, they had it restored and added additional figures. It was then set up in the Kinbacher inn . After about two and a half years, it moved to the Peteler store in Johannesgasse and from there in 1923 to the Innerberger Stadel, where it has been since then. The pieces listed were initially transmitted orally. Documentation of the repertoire first appeared in 1919 in the Wiener Zeitschrift für Volkskunde . Today it is one of the last stick puppet theaters in the German-speaking area.

On October 2nd, 2018 it was added to the list of intangible cultural heritage in Austria under the name of the "Steyrer Kripperl" crib game .

Construction and operation

The stage consists of a foreground with a fountain and a shepherd's scene . Behind it is the nativity scene with the birth of Christ. To the right and left of the crib, different crafts are shown on two levels. These are mechanically moved equipment and figures. These differ from the unmoved religious nativity figures and the manually guided stick puppets on the upper level. These stick puppets act left and right in front of the models of Steyrer old town houses, as well as on a bridge arch in the middle. Behind this arch there is an exchangeable backdrop painting. It is played with original characters, the oldest of which are several hundred years old. From Advent to after Epiphany there are performances with Christmas scenes and local historical events. The game director is Gerhard Netzbeda .
