Liebstatt Sunday

Liebstattsonntag refers to the fourth Sunday of the Quadragesima (Lent), Laetare , in Upper Austria .

1641 confirmed the time for Gmunden competent Passau Bishop Leopold Wilhelm of Austria , the Corpus Christi Brotherhood giving it access on the 4th  Sunday of Lent , the poor of the city invite to the common meal, while the vow of faithfulness and brotherly love, "Liabb'státt' n “('Confirm love').

The custom has changed over the centuries. In place of feeding the poor were gingerbread hearts that are given away as a thank you for received love. Unmarried boys did their beloved with a heart Liebstatt their commitment to engagement known.

The Liebstatt Sunday is a typical Upper Austrian custom between the Salzkammergut , Traunviertel and Mühlviertel . In addition to the communities around the Traunsee , in Bad Goisern , Hallstatt , Vorchdorf , Bachmanning , Krenglbach , Bad Schallerbach , Laakirchen , Asten , Grein , Gallneukirchen , Alberndorf , Katsdorf , Schwertberg , parish churches in the Mühlkreis and Windhaag near Perg, gingerbread hearts are baked, decorated and given away / sold. A typical saying is "A real love heart helps against any kind of pain."

In March 2014, took Austrian Commission for UNESCO to Liebstattsonntag in Gmunden on the list of national intangible cultural heritage in Austria , into the division Social Practices, rituals and festivals. The purpose of this designation is binding protection as a living cultural tradition. There the custom is particularly cultivated by the two local traditional costume associations , the gold hoods and the headscarf group .
