Under the name Prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps , from the 5th to the 1st millennium BC BC, the UNESCO lists 111 sites of prehistoric pile dwellings in Switzerland , Germany , Austria , Italy , France and Slovenia as world cultural heritage .

Admission and award

The sites were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2011. The application was led by Switzerland. The official award ceremony took place on September 10, 2011 in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. All other sites of pile dwellings in the vicinity of the Alps are associated with the 111 sites that were recorded directly. The total number of prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps in the World Heritage is a little over 900 and increases with every new find.

Find places in Switzerland

Of the transnational serial sites, 56 - spread over 15 cantons - are located in Switzerland, where the Europe-wide "pile-building fever" began. In spring 1855, the archaeologist discovered Ferdinand Keller as part of works for land reclamation at Zurich the remains of reference mile Rorenhaab that "in frühester past groups of families (...) which lived on fishing and hunting, but also the Feldbaues were not entirely ignorant ... inhabited huts that they had not built on dry ground, but on shallow banks on stilts. ”Important sites of cultural heritage are on Lake Zurich, the majority of which belong to the Horgen culture , including the Grosser Hafner settlements, which Keller has also researched , Kleiner Hafner and Alpenquai in Zurich. The prehistoric lake crossings on upper Lake Zurich between Rapperswil and Hurden, with the sites of Rapperswil-Jona-Technikum , Seegubel , Freienbach-Hurden-Seefeld and Freienbach-Hurden-Rosshorn as well as the settlement of Wetzikon, discovered by Jakob Messikommer at the end of the 19th century, are unique worldwide.
