history

The oldest written mention of Keutschach (as Chodesach ) comes from the year 1150.

The ancestral seat of the knight dynasty of the Keutschacher family, which has been documented since 1299, is in today's municipality . The best- known member of the family is the Salzburg Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach , during whose reign (1496–1519) it achieved its greatest power. However, the construction of Tanzenberg Castle by his nephew led to high debts, the Keutschachers subsequently lost their reputation and influence and expired in Salzburg in 1773.

The community of Keutschach was formed in 1850 and until 1903 comprised the cadastral community of Reifnitz , which was ceded in favor of the newly formed local community of Maria Wörth .

Agriculture was practiced almost exclusively in the municipality for centuries, until summer tourism played an increasingly important role in the course of the 20th century.

Buildings

Church tower of the parish church Sankt Georg
Filial church St. Nikolai
Polzerkreuz in Leisbach
  • Historically relevant are from the Neolithic period dating stilt houses in Lake Keutschach .
  • The parish church of St. Georg, first mentioned in a document in 1237, was originally built in the Romanesque style and received its present appearance through late Gothic and Baroque additions and alterations. The pneumatic organ with 13 sounding stops was created in 1959 by Rudolf Novak from Klagenfurt. The chime consists of a steel bell and four bronze bells by Johann Graßmayr, Innsbruck. These have a total weight of 2,785.5 kg. The peal is tuned to the chorale chord of the Salve Regina.
  • The Romanesque-Gothic death lamp right next to the parish church is considered the oldest in Austria.
  • The new Pyramidenkogel observation tower has been in operation since June 20, 2013 .
  • A special attraction is the pre-Romanesque stone slab walled into the southern outer wall of the parish church with an incised figural representation of a human skeleton, on whose pre-Christian or at least Christian origins the experts do not agree.
  • The parish also includes the two branch churches St. Margarethen (1532) and St. Nikolai (1385).
  • At the beginning of the 16th century, the owners of the valley in Keutschach built the "Old Castle", a castle-like castle complex consisting of several structures. In 1679, not far from this complex, the “New Castle” was built in the Baroque style, and later, probably under Count Vincent Orsini-Rosenberg in the 18th century, an additional storey was added . The baroque building has been owned by the municipality since 1967 and has been thoroughly renovated since then.
  • The "Polzerkreuz" in Leisbach from 1680 is the oldest wayside shrine in Carinthia.
  • There are several manufacturers of "Keutschacher ceramics" in the municipality, such as jugs, drinking mugs, vases and similar objects in the type of design characteristic of this region.
  • A vineyard is being built on the southern slope of the Rauth above the Baßgeigensee and the state road. As in other favorable places in the southernmost federal state of Austria, an attempt is being made here to bring viticulture back to Carinthia.
  • Between the Baßgeigensee and the Keutschacher See a nature trail with a focus on “ moor ” has been set up. Those interested in nature learn interesting facts about flora and fauna in swamp areas, wet meadows and floodplain landscapes on a circular hiking trail.

Abandoned quarry

To the north of the "Fischerhütte" in Plescherken number 57 is the disused local quarry in quartzite banks . “Quartzite” means metamorphic sandstone. This as well as the other quarries in the municipality had predominantly regional importance. They were used to extract rubble stones. The reddish colored break is already beginning to grow together. A steep cleft and flat foliation are visible. The "rusty" look comes from ferrous weathering coatings.

Rural architecture

The rural architecture in the municipality of Keutschach am See - as in most other regions of Carinthia - has changed several times in the last two centuries. The Franciscan cadastre was an important archival source from the first half of the last century, which tells us the site plan of the existing buildings and their function. A short and concise characteristic can be found in the “Catastral Estimation Elaborate”: “For the most part, the residential buildings are built one storey high with stones, only a few are made of wood. Some are covered with shingles, but mostly with straw, and only the edge of the roof is covered with shingles. The farm buildings near the residential buildings are bricked, but the upper part is timbered and covered with straw. "

It can be seen from this that in the first quarter of the 19th century there was a change in the down-to-earth construction method in that the older timber construction was replaced by solid construction. Due to the topographical location of the municipality of Keutschach am See south of the Wörther See, the buildings of the Inner Carinthian house landscape are integrated, the buildings of this old stock can all be classified as smoking rooms. As a rule, this is a line up of three living rooms (chamber, smoking room and stove room), which corresponds to the type of the “Slovenian house in Lower Carinthia” and is confirmed by the rectangular shape of the floor plans in the indication sketches. These also show the dominant characteristics of a two-yard system, that is, residential and farm buildings are erected separately from one another or grouped into a courtyard association, with additional farm buildings that are not always specified in more detail. An example of a pair of court in solid construction is the property commonly known as Holzer in Dobeinitz, for the mixed method of construction is the property Thomerl in Schelesnitz, in timbered wood technique commonly known as Hof Triebnig in Dobein is executed.

coat of arms

In 1954 the community took over the full coat of arms of the Keutschacher at the time of the height of their power, as it is shown in the coat of arms book C of the state archive (around 1625). In two fields of the shield, which is divided into four parts, there is an overturned red hat with three upright ostrich feathers, and the small heart shield in the center of the coat of arms shows a silver turnip with green leaves on a black background. There are no indications of the reasons for the choice of motif. The flag of Keutschach is green-white-black with an incorporated coat of arms.
