history
Finds on the Kathreinkogel , which is part of the municipality, suggest a settlement by Mesolithic hunters and gatherers (from the 7th millennium BC) and by Neolithic farmers (from the 3rd millennium BC). A settlement of the late Bronze Age Hallstatt culture could also be confirmed by archaeological finds.
Between the 2nd and 5th centuries AD, a Roman fort was built on the summit plateau of the Kathreinkogel, which was expanded to include an early Christian hall church in the late 4th century. Below the fort there is a burial ground with a total of 53 graves.
Since the settlement of the area by the Carantanians - Slavs in the 6th century and the establishment of Carantanian political system in the 7th century, the area is Sattnitz and Schiefling / Škofile closely with the Slovenian connected cultural history.
The district of Albersdorf was named "Albenesdorf" around 1150, Schiefling himself as "Schüflich" in a deed of donation from Duke Ulrich III of Carinthia . in 1256 ( "septem mansus sitos in villa Schüflich" - seven farms were transferred to the Reun Abbey near Graz) for the first time.
The construction of the Schieflinger Church, consecrated to the Archangel Michael , began around 1700 . Lignite was mined in the Turia Forest between 1814 and 1899 .
From a part of the former Leonstein district court, the four cadastral communities Schiefling, Maria Wörth, Kathrein and Techelweg formed the community Schiefling in 1850, the name of which was changed to Schiefling am See in 1900. In 1903, Maria Wörth split off as an independent local community. In 2006 the municipality was granted the right to use the designation “ market municipality ”. On June 1, 2010 the name was changed to "Schiefling am Wörthersee".

coat of arms
The golden tip at the base of the Schiefling coat of arms on the Wörthersee stands for the striking Kathreinkogel, the 772 m high "local mountain" of the community. The bishop's staff alludes to the origin of the place name: This originated from a corruption of the Slovenian word Skofiče , which means "village of the bishop", which probably means that of Freising, who had lived in Maria Wörth since the 9th century. The broken straightening wheel is the attribute of St. Catherine of Alexandria , the patroness of the Katharinenkapelle on the Kathreinkogel.
The coat of arms and flag were awarded to the community of Schiefling am Wörthersee on June 18, 1991. The flag is green and red with an incorporated coat of arms. The official blazon of the coat of arms reads: "Split from red and green by a golden bishop's staff growing from a lowered golden tip, separated from the halves of a broken golden wheel."
