history

Over the centuries, the eastern Klagenfurt field was strongly mixed in terms of rule and power politics. In the early and high Middle Ages, the originally Carantan Edlingers formed an influential, legally privileged layer between the nobility and the peasantry with their own judiciary, such as the later rule of Eibelhof or Wutschein, from which some cadastral communities emerged.

When local congregations were formed in Carinthia in 1850, the municipality area belonged to the Maria Saal regional court . In that year the community of Windisch St. Michael was constituted, which changed its name to Poggersdorf in 1896. During the municipal structural reform in 1973 , part of Hörtendorf was incorporated into Poggersdorf.

The community area was shaped by agriculture for centuries, in the last few decades Poggersdorf has developed into a residential and commuter community due to its proximity to the state capital. In 2013 Poggersdorf was raised to a market town .

population

According to the 2001 census, Poggersdorf has 2,850 inhabitants, 97.8% of whom are Austrian citizens. 87.5% of the population profess to the Roman Catholic and 2.9% to the Protestant Church, 0.7% are of the Islamic faith. 6.2% are without religious belief. There is a Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Leibsdorf . 97.1% stated German, 1.2% Slovenian and 0.6% Croatian as the colloquial language.

The parish church of Poggersdorf and the branch churches of Wutschein, Wabelsdorf and Eiersdorf are run in two languages (German-Slovenian). Historically, the municipality of Poggersdorf belongs to the Slovene dialect area of the Klagenfurt field, which is a transition dialect between the Slovene dialects of the Jaun Valley and the Rosental Valley. Johann Scheinigg identified it as a special variant of the Slovenian Rosental dialect in 1882, which was confirmed in the dialectological study by Katja Sturm-Schnabl based on field research. In his work, Die Assimilation im Rosenthaler Dialect, Scheinigg divides the Slovene Rosental dialect into three geographical areas: The Lower Rosental, the Upper Rosental and the Klagenfurt Plain. Regarding the last-mentioned area, he says: The "third sub-dialect prevails in the plain around Klagenfurt (kl.), It has the pronunciation of the e and o in common with the first, but differs from the previous two in the frequent withdrawal of the accent, where those have it on the final syllables; "This is particularly true of the neuter nouns and Adjktive. .

In the coat of arms of Poggersdorf, the green shield ground indicates the agricultural character of the community, the fallen black tip indicates the coal and steel industry (Notburgahütte) and the former mining of peat in the Raunachmoos. The pillar shrines depicted in the black tip are typical of the municipality, shrines of this type can be found in Wabelsdorf, Eiersdorf, on the Linsenberg and in the Raunachmoos. Lance and shepherd's point symbolize the military ability and the rural working life of the Carantan- Slovenian Edlingers , who played an important role in the region for a long time. Finally, the tongs represent iron production in the Notburgahütte.
