Geographical location
The place is about 1.5 km east of the center of Keutschach. Neighboring towns are Sekirn, Pertitschach, Höflein, Dobeinitz, Keutschach, Leisbach and Rauth. Sankt Nikolai is a place northwest of the Rauschelesees lake, which lies on the sunny slope of the lower Keutschacher Seental. A striking, eye-catching point is the church, which is clearly visible from the connecting road from Klagenfurt to Keutschach, as it stands on a small hill in the middle of the village.
church
The Catholic Church, consecrated to St. Nicholas , is a branch church of the parish of St. Georg in Keutschach and is located on a rocky hill next to a few houses. It was first built in 1150. The building is a small, essentially Romanesque structure (walled-up Romanesque window in the western part) with a Gothic choir, a five-eighth end and a pointed roof turret. A complete restoration was carried out between 1979 and 1981. The exterior facade was repainted in 1994. The roof is covered with wooden shingles. A baroque vestibule open to the west protects a pointed arched, profiled Gothic entrance portal. Furthermore, in 1992 the “St. Nikolaier Schießbuben ”, which celebrated their 10th anniversary this year, intends to buy a second bell. But one bells became two and so the church today calls three bells to church festivals. In 1997, on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the “St. Nikolaier Schießbuben “, the weathercock was gold-plated and inaugurated at a large church celebration.
Brechelgrube
Just 15 m east of the branch church is a so-called Brechel pit, which was last used around 1950. Such a pit (Slovene: Terična jama ) was a site for working flax . It is about two meters deep.
