In 1247 a Konrad von Tanzenberg was named. The castle was documented in 1300 and 1341 in the possession of the Mordax and Mordachs families. In 1513 the castle went to Maximilian I of Habsburg . The brothers Siegmund and Wolfgang von Keutschach - as nephews of the Archbishop of Salzburg Leonhard - started construction of today's castle in 1515. The castle, laid out in four wings around a rectangular courtyard , is one of the most important Renaissance complexes in Austria.

The castle fountain was probably completed by 1543 under the son of Leonhard of Wolfgang von Keutschach. In 1802 this fountain was transferred to the main square in Friesach . See Friesach city fountain . The property remained in the Keutschacher's possession until the second half of the 17th century.

The building fell into disrepair in the 19th century. In 1891 Georg von Gutmannsthal purchased the castle. In 1898 the Olivetans bought the castle and began to rebuild and convert it into a monastery building. The two lower floors correspond to the building fabric from the 16th century. Components of the medieval castle have been preserved in the northeast wing. Instead of the former ballroom on the southwest flank, a monastery church was built from 1898 .

From 1942 until the end of the war in 1945, Tanzenberg Castle served as a repository for the holdings of the central library of the NSDAP High School . In 1946 a boys' boarding school for candidates for priesthood began with a grammar school. In 1953 the castle became the property of the Gurk-Klagenfurt diocese . In 1995/1996 the facades were restored.

architecture

The mighty three-storey palace complex is clearly visible and dominating over the Zollfeld . Four wings around a rectangular courtyard form an important building of the Renaissance in Austria , although the decay in the 19th century and the renovations from 1898 onwards made a large part of the substance disappear. The original stock from the 16th century largely corresponds to the ground floor and first floor.

Seminary church (monastery church)

The neo-Romanesque , three-aisled gallery basilica with apse was built in the first two decades of the 20th century, but not completed. The outstanding work was carried out from 1980 to 1987.

On the facade there are three mosaic pictures made between 1924 and 1927 by Josef Pfefferle . The largest shows the Holy Family with the four saints Benedikt , Franziska, Florian and Bernhard. The two smaller mosaics represent the Archangel Michael and St. Agnes . The two mosaics "St. Benedict receives the rules of the order" and "Glory of St. Benedict" in the side aisles of the church are from this artist.

Between 1986 and 1987, the artist Valentin Oman designed the side walls of the chancel and the two side apses using casein tempera paints and gauze that was later removed . The side walls show stations in human life. The altarpiece of the winged altar , also from his hand, has the theme "Security in a new life" and shows the head of the Turin shroud on the upper side .
