Valentin Oman
Valentin Oman (born December 14, 1935 in St. Stefan, municipality of Finkenstein am Faaker See ) is an Austrian visual artist with a Slovenian mother tongue .
Life
Oman studied from 1958 to 1962 at the Academy of Applied Arts Vienna with Hilda Jesser-Schmid in the master class for painting. In 1963 he completed a course in printmaking with Riko Debenjak in Ljubljana .
In addition to painting, Oman created frescoes , reliefs in concrete , aluminum and bronze , often in the form of works in public spaces. This includes the design of a number of churches such as the church of the Tanzenberg monastery , the parish church of Eisenkappel , Sankt Jakob im Rosental or the Easter church in Oberwart , as well as the subsidiary church of St. Magdalena in Wasserhofen with the 24-part cycle " Ecce Homo ".
Since 1963 Oman has had a number of solo exhibitions, mainly in Austria and Slovenia, but also in Switzerland, Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium, Italy, Paris, London, Prague and New York.
Valentin Oman lives in Vienna and Finkenstein.
style
Oman is considered to be the representative of the early avant-garde in Carinthia and a master of sacred art. He is mainly concerned with the image of man. The figures are often fragmentary, torsos, heads or are only vaguely recognizable. His pictures are built up in many layers and have been revised many times. This creates the impression that the figures have been eroded out of the surface. An important topic of his art is also the transience or the becoming and passing away.
