The Olivetans , actually Benedictine Congregation of Monte Oliveto , (lat. Fratres Eremitae de monte Oliveti, Congregatio Sanctae Mariae montis Oliveti , sometimes also called the monks of Monte Oliveto or the Mount of Olives, religious symbol OSBOliv ) are a branch of the Order of the Benedictine order . Together with other Benedictine monastery associations, they form the Benedictine Confederation . The nuns of the order are known as Olivetans .

history

This congregation , one of the "white Benedictines", was founded by the Sienese nobles Bernardo Tolomei (* 1272, † 1348), Patrizio Patrizi and Ambrogio Piccolomini on March 26, 1319, when hermitic movements arose in Italy . In 1960 the Benedictine Branch Order joined the Benedictine Confederation as a congregation. The mother monastery of the Olivetans and at the same time the seat of the abbot general is the abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore in the Tuscan province of Siena . Since 2010 Father Diego M. Rosa OSB has been Abbot General .

The Olivetan women are also represented worldwide. There is also the monastery of the Olivetan Benedictine Sisters in Heiligkreuz near Cham in the canton of Zug , which joined the Benedictine Congregation of Monte Oliveto in 1892.
