Congregation
Congregation or monastery association is the name given to an association of independent monasteries in the Roman Catholic Church.

Benedictine congregations
The largest network system exists among the Benedictines . This is usually the association of Benedictine abbeys . Some of the congregations date back to the 15th century. The congregations are usually headed by an abbot or an archabbot . The 20 congregations of the federally organized Benedictine Order together form the Benedictine Confederation . She is represented by the Abbot Primate based in the Primate Abbey of Sant 'Anselmo in Rome.

Cistercian Congregations
The Cistercians , who emerged from the Benedictines, also know congregations. At the beginning of the history of the order there were no congregations, but the principle of filiation (daughter monasteries), which was replaced by congregations in the course of time, at the latest since the 16th century. Further interventions happened after the French Revolution when the order was reorganized. Since then, an elected Abbot General has represented the entire order in Rome. The individual congregations, however, are headed by the Abbot President .
