Wettingen Abbey Mehrerau - parent monastery of the Cistercian congregation of Mehrerau

The Mehrerau Congregation (Latin Congregatio Augiensis ) is a voluntary worldwide association, a congregation of several independent monasteries (with three priories ) of the Cistercian Order under the leadership of a mother monastery , the Territorial Abbey of Wettingen-Mehrerau . A forerunner of the Mehrerau Congregation was the Upper German Cistercian Congregation .

history

The monastery, located in Mehrerau near Bregenz , Austria , was settled by the monks of the Wettingen monastery who were expelled from Switzerland .

The Mehrerau Congregation came into being in 1888, when the Wettingen-Mehrerau and Marienstatt Abbeys , their subsidiary monasteries and the Swiss women's monasteries, which were subordinate to Wettingen-Mehrerau, separated from the Austrian Cistercian Congregation and formed their own congregation.

Abbot Pres

Abbot Preses of the Congregation is always the Abbot of the Territorial Abbey of Wettingen-Mehrerau, since 2018 Abbot Vinzenz Wohlwend OCist. A proposal to abandon this regulation in favor of an elected Abbot President was rejected almost unanimously at the 2006 Congregational Chapter. As the abbot of a territorial abbey ( Abbatia territorialis ), the ruling abbot von Mehrerau is a full member of the Austrian Bishops' Conference . The abbot publishes the order magazine Cistercienser Chronik .

Monasteries

Six men's and thirteen women's abbeys are associated in the congregation.
