The Frauenthal Monastery (Latin Abbatia monialium Vallis sanctae Mariae ) is a Cistercian abbey in Hagendorn in the municipality of Cham in the canton of Zug .

The monastery is located on the river Lorze and was founded in 1231 by a foundation by Freiherr Ulrich von Schnabelburg and his wife. The Necrologium Frauenthalense names Count Ludwig von Frohburg as a co-founder of the monastery - November 22nd: "Ludwig graff von Froburg, mittstiffter, anno 1246 ". In 1253 it was accepted into the Cistercian order . The Schwyz destroyed a large part of the buildings in 1351 during a dispute with Duke Albrecht . During the Reformation the convent was abolished, during the Counter-Reformation the religious community was formed again. Since 1586 she has the right to elect an abbess again.

The complex, designed as a building district according to Cistercian tradition, was renewed in the 17th and 18th centuries. The Vorarlberg architect Johann Moosbrugger built the east and south wings with the chapter house and the refectory with the cloister in the late 17th century.

Inside of the baroque monastery church

The current building stock, with the exception of some commercial and residential buildings of the estate, coincides with the scope shown in the Siegfried Atlas of 1880. In the 1990s, most of the buildings in the listed complex were professionally renovated.

The sisters belonging to the convent live again according to the order of St. Benedict . The abbey belongs to the Mehrerau congregation . In 1957 she founded the Cistercian convent Valley of Our Lady (also: New Frauenthal ) in the US state of Wisconsin .
