geography

Posieux is 676  m above sea level. M. , seven kilometers southwest of the canton capital Friborg (beeline). The street village extends on a plateau between the valleys of the Glâne in the west and the Saane in the east, directly above the steep drop to the Saanegraben, in the Molasse hill country of the Freiburg Central Plateau . The former municipality area was around 6.7 km². The area is bounded in the south and east by the strongly meandering river course of the Saane, in the north by the Glâne. The Saane in particular is cut deep into the molasse layers and has formed steep slopes up to 100 m high, partly interspersed with rocks. The Posieux plateau includes the height of Le Sapex ( 688  m above sea level ) and the wooded areas Bois de Monterban ( 679  m above sea level ) and Bois de Châtillon (up to 620  m above sea level ) above the confluence of the Saane and Glâne.

population

With 889 inhabitants (1997), Posieux was one of the smaller municipalities in the canton of Friborg before the merger. Posieux includes the Hauterive monastery ( 579  m above sea level ) in a loop of the Saane, the hamlet of Grangeneuve ( 634  m above sea level ) on the plateau west of the Saane and Moulin Neuf ( 576  m above sea level ) in one Bend of the Glâne river and several individual farms.

economy

Posieux was a predominantly agricultural village until the second half of the 20th century . The water power of the Glâne has been used since the 14th century to operate a mill that belonged to the Hauterive monastery. Even today arable farming , fruit growing , dairy farming and cattle breeding have a certain place in the income structure of the population.

Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector, including in the construction industry, in the electrical industry, in mechanical workshops and in a joinery. Several gravel pits are being exploited near Posieux. The Agricultural Institute of the Canton of Friborg and since 1974 the Federal Research Institute for Livestock Production, which was renamed Agroscope Liebefeld-Posieux (ALP) in 2004, are located in the Grangeneuve settlement .

In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community thanks to its attractive location. Many workers are therefore commuters who mainly work in the Freiburg region.

traffic

The community has good transport links. It is located on the old main road from Freiburg to Bulle . The next connection to the A12 motorway (Bern-Vevey), which in sections forms the western municipal boundary, is around 4 km from the town center. From 1971 the autobahn from Bern ended at Posieux; it has been passable since 1981.

As the second Swiss trolleybus operation , the Gleislose Bahn Freiburg – Posieux was put into operation in 1912 and extended to Magnedens in 1913 and to Farvagny-le-Grand in 1916 ; it was later replaced by a bus route. Today Posieux is connected to the public transport network by the Transports publics Fribourgeois bus routes , which run from Freiburg to Bulle and from Freiburg to Rueyres-Saint-Laurent .

history

Sacred Heart Chapel

The area of Posieux was inhabited very early, as the numerous rocky outcrops and sandstone cliffs above the Saane and Glâne were ideally suited as prehistoric settlement points. During the Hallstatt period, Châtillon-sur-Glâne was an important trading center. Some finds are also known from Roman times .

In the 11th century and in the first half of the 12th century the area was ruled by the Lords of Glâne, who founded the Abbey of Hauterive. The first written mention of the place took place in 1155 under the name Posuos ; from 1445 the name Posiouz has been handed down. The place name is derived from the patois expression posat (well, cistern).

Posieux came under the rule of Freiburg in 1452 and was assigned to the old landscape (Neustadtpanner). After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), the village belonged to the Friborg district during the Helvetic and the following period, before it was incorporated into the Saane district in 1848 with the new cantonal constitution.

As part of the community mergers promoted by the Canton of Friborg since 2000, the residents of Posieux and Ecuvillens decided to merge their communities. With effect from January 1, 2001, the merger became legally binding. Hauterive (FR) was chosen as the new municipality name , which means that the important monastery has now also been included in the municipality register.

Attractions

On the hill of Sapex stands the Sacred Heart Chapel, which was built between 1911 and 1924. It commemorates the gathering of around 15,000 Freiburg conservatives that was directed against the radical government. Posieux belongs to the parish of Ecuvillens. There is a 17th century chapel by the court settlement of Les Muèses.
