geography

Arconciel is 734  m above sea level. M. , seven kilometers south-southwest of the canton capital of Friborg (as the crow flies). The village extends from a promising location on the slope east of the Saan Valley , in the pre-Alpine hill zone of the Freiburg Central Plateau .

The area of the municipal area of 6.1 km² covers a section of the pre-alpine hilly landscape east of the Saanegraben. The western border forms the strongly meandering river course of the Saane, which is cut deep into the molasse layers . The approximately 200 to 500 m wide flat valley floor is predominantly forested, there is only a little pastureland. This is followed by a steep slope up to 100 m high, formed over long stretches of sandstone cliffs , which merges further east into a corrugated plateau. In the southern part, the municipality extends to the forest height of the Bois de Mont (at 828  m above sea level, the highest point of Arconciel), and the southern border runs along the village stream of Senèdes. To the north, the area extends to the Bois de Monteynan ( 700  m above sea level ) and the Hauterive power station. In 1997, 9% of the municipal area was settled, 29% forest and woodland, 59% agriculture and a little more than 3% was unproductive land.

Arconciel includes new residential areas south of the village, the hamlet of Les Fontanalles ( 695  m above sea level ) on the plateau north of the village and numerous individual farms. Neighboring municipalities of Arconciel are Marly , Ependes , Senèdes , Treyvaux , Gibloux and Hauterive .

population

With 949 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Arconciel is one of the smaller communities in the canton of Friborg. 91.0% of the residents are French-speaking, 6.3% German-speaking and 0.6% speak Spanish (as of 2000). The population of Arconciel was 327 in 1870 and 392 in 1900. After a peak in 1910 with 427 inhabitants, the population decreased by almost 25% to 326 inhabitants in the course of the 20th century until 1970. Since then there has been a rapid population growth combined with a doubling of the population within 20 years.

economy

Arconciel was a predominantly agricultural village until the second half of the 20th century . Agriculture , dairy farming and cattle breeding still play an important role in the income structure of the population today . Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. Several gravel pits are being exploited in the municipality. In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community thanks to its attractive location. Many workers are therefore commuters who mainly work in the Freiburg region.

traffic

The community is located off the main thoroughfares on a connecting road from Corpataux to Marly . The next connection to the A12 motorway (Bern – Vevey) is around seven kilometers from the town center. Arconciel is connected to the public transport network by a bus line operated by Transports publics Fribourgeois between Freiburg and Treyvaux .

The municipality of Arconciel was settled very early. A significant find is a Rixheim sword that was used during the Bronze Age and dates back to around 1200 BC. Was dated. Furthermore, the remains of two Roman manors and a Roman burial ground from the 1st to 4th centuries were discovered.

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1082 under the name castrum Arconciacum . Numerous other spellings appeared later: Arcuncie and Arcunciei (1146), Arguncie (1251), Arcontie (1264), Arconcye , Arkontie (1270), Alconcie (1286), Arconcier (1368), Arconciez (1445) and Arcanciel (1755). The German version is first recorded as Erchunzacho and Erchunzach in 1236 , Ergenzach has been handed down since 1578. The place name probably goes back to the Gallo-Roman personal name Archont (i) us .

Arconciel formed an important rule since the 11th century, which included Farvagny, Corpataux, Magnedens, Ecuvillens, Sales and Treyvaux areas on both sides of the Saanegraben. The Saane crossing at Arconciel was controlled by two castles (Arconciel and Illens), which were located on opposite rock ledges surrounded by the Saane. The rule Arconciel belonged from 1143 to a sideline of the Counts of Neuchâtel; In 1251 it came under the sovereignty of the Counts of Savoy.

At the beginning of the 12th century, a settlement developed around Arconciel Castle, which gradually developed into a market town. It experienced its heyday in the 13th century and was granted city rights under the Savoy in 1271. From around 1300 there were numerous changes of ownership through purchase and inheritance. Various armed conflicts resulted in the slow decline of the town. The castle fell into ruin in the second half of the 14th century, and the town was abandoned in 1450. The farming village of Arconciel was then re-established at its current location. Today only three building ruins remain on the site of the town, such as the tower of the castle with walled-up windows, the foundation walls of a building on a sandstone block and the remains of a defensive tower on the city moat. From the former bridge there is still a short, stone pillar on the Arconciel side, while the Saane has washed away all the remains on the Illens side.

The rule of Arconciel, the center of which was from then on Illens Castle, was conquered by Bern and Friborg during the Burgundian Wars in 1475 and finally abolished in 1484. Arconciel, Senèdes and Ecuvillens were incorporated into the Freiburg Old Landscape, the rest were combined in the Bailiwick of Illens.

After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Arconciel initially belonged to the La Roche district during the Helvetic period and from 1803 to the Friborg district before it was incorporated into the Saane district in 1848 with the new cantonal constitution.

Saint-Jacques church in Arconciel

The core of the parish church of Saint-Jacques dates back to the 12th century. The church was given its present form as part of a new building between 1784 and 1789. Apart from the castle moat and a few remains of the wall, nothing is visible of the former Arconciel Castle and the city complex. The Pont de la Tuffière, a bridge over the Saane, dates from 1835.
