Villarsel-le-Gibloux is 748  m above sea level. M. , 14 kilometers southwest of the canton capital Friborg (beeline). The farming village extends on a slope that slopes slightly to the north south of the Glâne valley , at the northwestern foot of Mont Gibloux , in the Molasse hill country of the Freiburg Central Plateau . population

With 228 inhabitants (2002), Villarsel-le-Gibloux was one of the small communities in the canton of Friborg before the merger. Villarsel-le-Gibloux includes the hamlet of Les Golards ( 752  m above sea level ) west of the village and a few individual farms.

economy

Until the second half of the 20th century, Villarsel-le-Gibloux was predominantly an agricultural village. Agriculture , dairy farming and cattle breeding still play an important role in the income structure of the population today . Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who mainly work in the Freiburg region.

traffic

The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a connecting road from Estavayer-le-Gibloux to Villargiroud . The village is connected to Cottens train station by a postbus course that runs to Villarsel-le-Gibloux at certain times of the day .

history

The first written mention of the place took place in 1278 under the name Vilarsel subtus Giblour ; from 1403 the name Villari Salletti has been handed down. The Bishop of Lausanne had a castle built here around 1220. Villarsel-le-Gibloux subsequently formed its own small lordship, which later saw several changes of ownership and was under the influence of the Pont dominion. In 1447, the castle was destroyed by the latter during armed conflicts between the Savoy and the Friborg.

In 1483 the village came under the rule of Freiburg and was assigned to the Vogtei Pont-Farvagny. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Villarsel-le-Gibloux belonged to the Romont district during the Helvetic period and to the Farvagny district from 1803 before it was incorporated into the Saane district in 1848 with the new cantonal constitution. Villarsel-le-Gibloux does not have its own church, it belongs to the parish of Estavayer-le-Gibloux.

As part of the community mergers promoted by the canton of Friborg since 2000, the residents of Villarsel-le-Gibloux, Estavayer-le-Gibloux , Rueyres-Saint-Laurent and Villarlod decided in 2002 to merge their communities. With effect from January 1, 2003, the merger of the villages to form the new municipality with the name Le Glèbe came into force.
