geography

Aerial photo (1964)

Rossens is at 708  m above sea level. M. , ten kilometers south-southwest of the canton capital of Friborg (as the crow flies). The village extends on a high plateau west of the Saanegraben , in the Molasse hill country of the Freiburg Central Plateau .

The area of the 5.1 km² former municipal area comprises a section of the Molasse Heights between the valleys of the Glâne in the west and the Saane in the east. The eastern border is formed by the strongly meandering river course of the Saane, which is cut deep into the molasse layers. The approximately 200 m wide flat valley floor is predominantly forested. This is followed by a steep slope up to 100 m high, criss-crossed over long stretches of sandstone cliffs , which merges further west into a gently undulating plateau. This is partly occupied by meadows and arable land, partly by forests ( Le Chaney , 722  m above sea level ).

In the southeast, Rossens has a small share of the lake area of the Lac de la Gruyère reservoir , which also has steep bank areas here. To the southwest, the municipality extends to the height of Bibou at the northeast foot of the Gibloux . Here with 762  m above sea level. M. reached the highest point of Rossens. In 1997, 16% of the municipal area was settled, 34% forest and woodland, 49% agriculture and a little more than 1% was unproductive land.

Rossens includes the hamlet of Montet ( 708  m above sea level ) on the northern edge of the village, the Illens farmstead ( 694  m above sea level ) on the plateau above the steep drop to the Saane valley and various individual farms. Neighboring municipalities of Rossens were Corpataux-Magnedens , Arconciel , Treyvaux , Pont-la-Ville , Pont-en-Ogoz and Farvagny .

population

With 1293 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2014), Rossens was one of the medium-sized communities in the canton of Friborg. 90.8% of the residents are French-speaking, 5.7% German-speaking and 1.2% speak Portuguese (as of 2000). The population of Rossens was 392 in 1870 and 397 in 1900. In the course of the 20th century the population fluctuated in the range between 340 and 410 inhabitants. Since 1970 (410 inhabitants) there has been a marked increase in population combined with almost tripling the number of inhabitants within 30 years.

economy

Until the second half of the 20th century, Rossens was mainly an agricultural village. Today, however, arable farming , fruit growing , dairy farming and cattle breeding only play a minor role in the income structure of the population.

Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. As a result of the good transport connections, a commercial zone was created in the 1970s. Companies in the electrical industry, telecommunications, the construction of air conditioning systems, the watchmaking industry, IT and precision mechanics are represented in Rossens today. In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community. Many employed people are therefore commuters who mainly work in the Freiburg and Bulle regions.

traffic

The former community is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on a road connecting Farvagny to La Roche . The next connection to the A12 motorway (Bern-Vevey), which opened in 1981, is around 1.5 km from the town center. Rossens is connected to the public transport network by the Transports publics Fribourgeois bus routes , which run from Freiburg to Bulle or Rueyres-Saint-Laurent .

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1162 under its current name; from 1668 the name Rossin has been handed down. The place name goes back to the Burgundian personal name Röß or Rotzo and means with the suffix -ens as much as for the people of the Rotzo .

Rossens belonged to the Pont dominion since the 12th century . With this, the village came under the rule of Freiburg in 1483 and was assigned to the Vogtei Pont-Farvagny. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Rossens belonged to the Friborg district during the Helvetic Republic and to the Farvagny district from 1803 before it was incorporated into the Saane district with the new cantonal constitution in 1848. With effect from January 1, 1972, Illens , which had previously formed an independent municipality, was incorporated into Rossens.

Attractions

After Rossens became an independent parish in 1870 (previously part of Farvagny), the new parish church Saint-Joseph was built in 1874. The ruins of Illens Castle, which dates from the 13th century, stand on a ledge surrounded by the Saane.
