Avry is a municipality in the District de la Sarine (German: Saanebezirk) in the canton of Friborg in Switzerland . The municipality Avry was created on January 1, 2001 through the merger of the previously independent municipalities Avry-sur-Matran ( Friborg Patois Avri chu Matran ? / I , German Avry ob Matran ) and Corjolens . Avry is 679  m above sea level. M. , 7 km west-southwest of the canton capital Freiburg (linear distance). The village extends in a panoramic position on a ridge between the valleys of the Glâne in the south and the Sonnaz in the north, in the Molasse hills of the Freiburg Central Plateau . The community is now part of the Freiburg agglomeration .

The area of ​​the 5.8 km² municipal area comprises a section of the Molasse Heights west of Freiburg. The central part of the municipality is occupied by the ridge of Avry, on which 713  m above sea level. M. the highest point of the municipality is reached, and which is limited to the northeast by the forest of Verdilloud . To the south, the area extends over the formerly boggy valley of Rosé to the La Râpe forest crest ( 692  m above sea level ). In the west the parish extends over a valley on the slope of Corjolens. In the north, the municipal boundary runs along the Sonnaz and Lac de Seedorf , which lie in a flat depression up to 1 km wide, which formerly formed an extensive moorland. In 1997, 13% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 12% by forests and woodlands and 75% by agriculture.

Avry consists of the districts Avry-Bourg ( 679  m above sea level ) and Avry-Center ( 682  m above sea level ) on the ridge, the industrial and train station settlement Rosé ( 668  m above sea level ) on a saddle between the valleys of Sonnaz and Glâne, the hamlet of Corjolens ( 660  m above sea level , formerly an independent municipality) and some individual farms. There is an extensive residential area between Rosé and Avry-Bourg. Avry's neighboring municipalities are Corminboeuf , Matran , Neyruz , La Brillaz and Prez .

With 1921 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018) Avry is one of the medium-sized communities in the canton of Friborg. 86.0% of the residents are French-speaking, 8.2% German-speaking and 1.2% speak Italian (as of 2000). The population of Avry was 380 in 1850 and 490 in 1900. After a peak in 1940 with 521 inhabitants, the population decreased by around 20% to 421 inhabitants by 1960. Since then, rapid population growth has been recorded, combined with a tripling of the number of inhabitants within 30 years.

Avry was a predominantly agricultural village until the second half of the 20th century . During the Second World War , peat was cut at Avry. Today arable farming , dairy farming and cattle breeding only play a minor role in the income structure of the population.

Numerous other jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. Located near Freiburg and on the main traffic axes, Avry has developed into an industrial and commercial location with extensive shopping opportunities since the 1970s. In 1965 Sofraver AG set up shop in Avry-sur-Matran, which produces insulating glass. Other companies are active in the construction and transport industry, in the electrical industry, information technology, switchgear construction and swimming pool construction. Since 1973, the big shopping center there Avry-Center of Migros . In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community thanks to its attractive location. Many workers are therefore commuters who mainly work in the Freiburg region.

The community is very well developed in terms of transport. It is located on the main road from Freiburg to Payerne . The closest connection to the A12 motorway (Bern-Vevey) is around 2 km from the town center. On September 4, 1862, the railway line from Lausanne to Friborg with a station in Rosé was put into operation. There are three bus routes operated by Transports publics Fribourgeois from Freiburg to Lentigny, Nierlets-les-Bois and Rosé, as well as a post bus route from Avry to Romont, for the local distribution of public transport .

history

The first written mention of the place took place in 1162 under the name De Avriei ; derived from the Gallo-Roman surname Aprius . The aristocratic Affry family, who ruled the village, has been documented since the 13th century. Avry came under the rule of Freiburg through purchase in 1442 and was assigned to the old landscape (Neustadtpanner). After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), the village belonged to the Friborg district during the Helvetic and the following period, before it was incorporated into the Saane district in 1848 with the new cantonal constitution.

As part of the community mergers promoted by the Canton of Friborg since 2000, the residents of Avry-sur-Matran and Corjolens decided to merge their communities. The new political municipality created with effect from January 1, 2001 was named Avry.

Attractions

The Château de Buman, built around 1704, is located in Avry. Another 18th century country house is in Courtaney. The Trinity Chapel dates from 1897. Avry is part of the Matran parish.
