Estavayer-le-Gibloux ( Friborg Patois Tsavalyi-le-Dzubyà ? / I ) is a town and formerly an independent political municipality in the District de la Sarine (German: Saanebezirk) in the canton of Friborg in Switzerland . The former German name Stäffis am Gibel is no longer used today. On January 1, 2003, Estavayer-le-Gibloux merged with Rueyres-Saint-Laurent , Villarlod and Villarsel-le-Gibloux to form the new municipality of Le Glèbe . geography

Estavayer-le-Gibloux is 700  m above sea level. M. , 13 km southwest of the canton capital Friborg (beeline). The farming village extends on the slope south of the Glâne valley , at the northern foot of Mont Gibloux , in the Molasse hill country of the Freiburg Central Plateau . The former municipality area was around 2.5 km². The area extended southwards from the course of the Glâne over the slope of Estavayer-le-Gibloux, which is bounded in the west by the forest hill Bois de Vernex ( 725  m above sea level ), up to the height at Les Combachires ( 750  m above sea level). M. ). Over time, the river Glèbe has cut a valley into this slope through erosion . To the east of the Glèbe, the area extended over the Sur la Tsandelâ plateau to the Longivue stream .

population

With 170 inhabitants (2002), Estavayer-le-Gibloux was one of the small communities in the canton of Friborg before the merger. In 1850 the village had 244 inhabitants, in 1900 260 inhabitants. After a peak in 1920 with 313 inhabitants, the population decreased by over 60% to 118 people by 1990. Since then, the population has increased again. Several individual farms belong to Estavayer-le-Gibloux.

Estavayer-le-Gibloux was a predominantly agricultural village until the second half of the 20th century . Even today, the have farming , the fruit production , the dairy industry and animal husbandry an important role in the employment structure of the population. Other jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector, including in a transport company. Two gravel pits are being exploited east of the village. In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who mainly work in the Freiburg region.

history

The area of ​​Estavayer-le-Gibloux was already settled in Roman times, which was proven by the discovery of the remains of a villa probably built in the 2nd or 3rd century AD.

The first written mention of the place took place around 1160 under the name Estavaiet . Later, the names Staviolum sub Jublor (1227), Estavaiel li villa (1228) and Estavayer-le-Giblianz (1513) appeared. The place name is derived from the personal name Stavius .

In the Middle Ages , Estavayer-le-Gibloux belonged to the Pont dominion. With this, the village came under the rule of Freiburg in 1483 and was assigned to the Vogtei Pont-Farvagny. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Estavayer-le-Gibloux belonged to the Romont district during the Helvetic period and to the Farvagny district from 1803 before it was incorporated into the Saane district in 1848 with the new cantonal constitution.

As part of the community mergers supported by the canton of Friborg since 2000, the residents of Estavayer-le-Gibloux, Rueyres-Saint-Laurent , Villarlod and Villarsel-le-Gibloux decided in 2002 to merge their communities. With effect from January 1, 2003, the merger of the villages to form the new municipality with the name Le Glèbe came into force.

Attractions

The parish church of Saint-Clémens is mentioned as early as 1227. The church was given its present form when it was rebuilt between 1842 and 1847.
