geography

course

The headwaters of the Glâne are located in the Molasse hills of the southwestern Freiburg Central Plateau , east of the upper reaches of the Broye , in the municipality of Le Flon north of the village of Bouloz . It rises in a basin at 844  m above sea level. M. between the forest heights of La Râpe in the west and La Tossaire in the east and initially bears the name Rio d'Enfer .

For the first two kilometers, the stream flows to the northwest, before changing its direction of flow to the northeast and using the terrain structures in the Molasse high plateau, which were marked out by the Ice Age Rhone glacier and always running from southwest to northeast. From Siviriez , the Glâne runs for 13 km in a wide open high valley, the valley floor of which is an average of 700  m above sea level. M. lies. On this section, the water has a height difference of just 50 meters. The high valley, which is up to two kilometers wide, used to form extensive moorlands in various places , which were meliorated at the end of the 19th century or the beginning of the 20th century . The course of the river has therefore been canalized and straightened over large stretches. The high valley of the Glâne runs parallel to the middle reaches of the Broye, about six kilometers further to the north-west, whose valley floor is 200 meters lower.

Below Villarimboud , the Glâne flows in an easterly direction, where it has a predominantly natural or near-natural course with meanders and swampy floodplains. The two most important tributaries, namely the Neirigue and the Glèbe , flow into the valley near Autigny .

At Autigny, the Glâne changes its direction of flow again to the northeast. It digs itself deeper and deeper into the molasse layers of the area and forms a canyon-like forest valley , partly crossed by sandstone cliffs . After flowing through the Matran basin , the Glâne flows below Villars-sur-Glâne at 560  m above sea level. M. , just a few kilometers south of Freiburg , into the Saane.

Special

The hydroelectric power of the Glâne was previously used in various places to operate mills and sawmills. While the lower reaches between Autigny and Matran are difficult to access, the high valley of the Glâne already formed an important traffic axis from Friborg to Lausanne in the Middle Ages . Since 1862, the predominantly agricultural high valley has also been used by the railway line from Freiburg to Lausanne due to its simple topography. The center of the upper Glâne is the town of Romont , which is located on an isolated hill in the middle of the high valley.
