The Verzasca is a wild river in the Valle Verzasca valley of the same name , in the Swiss canton of Ticino . The name goes back to Latin vertex ( parting ), which in the language of the valley developed from vertezzöö to verzöö . Verzöö is the name of a higher part of the village of Lavertezzo. The fraction lies on the top of a mountain nose, from where you can see further up and down the valley than from the lower village center. According to this, Verzasca can be understood as the 'Lavertezzo Valley'. The name Verzasca has nothing to do with verde or acqua .
geography
The river has its source at the 2864 m high Pizzo Barone and initially flows through the semicircular Val Vegorness. The first settlement on the river is Sonogno ( 918 m above sea level ), where the Val Redorta joins. Then the river flows south through a valley with Mediterranean vegetation, vineyards, but also craggy, steep mountain slopes, at Brione the Osura flows into the Verzasca. Towards the end of the valley there is alpine barreness. The Ponte dei Salti in Lavertezzo , a double-arched bridge, is a well-known postcard motif. There is a lot of bathing around the bridge in summer, the washouts in the rocks sometimes result in natural bathtubs. But at the same time it is very dangerous; In the meantime, local “watchdogs” run along the river and warn or indicate where it is relatively safe.
It is also popular with paddlers and - when the water level is low - with divers . There are two known Tauchpätze where sophisticated drift diving can be practiced. One dive site is the basin below the Ponte dei Salti near Lavertezzo and the other is the so-called Amsler basin a little above Corippo . In addition to these two dive sites, there are some lesser-known opportunities to dive in the Verzasca.
The last kilometers of the valley are significantly shaped by the Lago di Vogorno , a reservoir with a 220-meter-high dam wall , which seals the valley from the Magadino plain and became famous for James Bond's bungee jump in the film GoldenEye . At Tenero ( 210 m above sea level ) the Verzasca flows into Lake Maggiore .
There is a sunken village in the reservoir, which can be seen when the water level is low.
