Source and mouth of the Mentue

The Mentue is a 34 km long southern (in relation to the Zihl right) tributary of Lake Neuchâtel and thus belongs to the catchment area of the Rhine . The course of the river lies entirely in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland . It drains an area of approximately 105 km².

Surname

The river name was first mentioned in 1230 as Mentuye . The name Menthoez has been handed down from 1536 ; later the spellings Menthuaz and Mantue appeared .

geography

course

The source area of the Mentue is located at around 910 m above sea level. M. in the wooded heights of the Jorat north of the Col du Chalet-à-Gobet pass . The stream that rises here is called Corbassière .

After about 3 km it joins the Ruisseau de la Rosse flowing in from the left and now takes on the name Mentue . The Mentue now flows with a fairly constant gradient to the north and gradually deepens into the molasse layers of the Jorat and the adjacent high plateau of the Gros de Vaud . The steep valley flanks, up to 100 m high in the middle section of the river, are almost continuously forested and have sandstone cliffs in some places . Thus the Mentue forms a deep valley furrow that is only crossed by a few roads. It serves as a natural border between the former Vaudois districts of Echallens and Moudon .

In the municipality of Bioley-Magnoux , the largest side stream of the Mentue flows with the Sauteru from the left. Below this estuary, the notch valley of the Mentue widens to a basin near Donneloye . This is followed by another 2 km long section, deepened like a gorge into the surrounding plateaus, which is spanned by the 100 m high Pont sur la Mentue viaduct of the A1 motorway .

At the hamlet of La Mauguettaz the valley opens abruptly and the Mentue enters the Yvonand floodplain . With a flat alluvial cone , which is pushed about 300 m into the lake, the river flows into Yvonand at an altitude of 429 m above sea level. M. in Lake Neuchâtel.

Tributaries

In addition to the Sauteru, only the Coruz and the Botterel (from the left) and the Augine and the Ruisseau des Vaux (from the right) are worth mentioning as side streams.

Special

Large sections of the course of the Mentue river are natural to natural, only the lowest part in the Yvonand plain is canalised and straightened. The towns on the Mentue are Gossens and Yvonand . The middle and upper reaches of the river turned out to be unfavorable for the establishment of villages, especially because there was enough settlement space on the surrounding high plateaus. The ledges enclosed by the Mentue and its tributaries offered a strategically good location for the medieval town of Dommartin and the castle of Bercher . The water power of the Mentue was previously used in several places for the operation of mills and sawmills.
