The Zihl Canal , or Canal de la Thielle in French , is an approximately 8.5 km long water connection (piercing) between Lake Neuchâtel and Lake Biel . The original bed of the Zihl is still partially preserved.
The Zihl Canal was built together with the Broye Canal , which connects the Neuchâtel and Murten lakes . The correction of the waters of the Jura was realized in 2 stages . In 1891 the canals were completed and the previously often flooded, swampy Zealand could be cultivated. Normally, the water in the Zihl Canal flows from Lake Neuchâtel to Lake Biel, but in the opposite direction when the Aare floods; Lake Neuchâtel serves as an overflow basin.
The canal is between 70 m and 90 m wide, depending on the location.
