The Zihl (French Thièle or Thielle ) is a tributary of the Aare .
It arises from the confluence of the Orbe and the Talent northeast of the town of Orbe in the Swiss canton of Vaud , flows for the most part as a canalised river to the northeast through the intensely cultivated Orbe plain (French: Plaine de l'Orbe ) and flows after 9 km at Yverdon -les-Bains in Lake Neuchâtel .
The other parts of the Zihl were the connection between the Neuchâtel and Bielersee (middle Zihl) and the natural runoff from the Bielersee into the Aare (lower Zihl). These two parts of the river were largely replaced by canals on the occasion of the correction of the Jura waters . From the middle Zihl a river loop - La Vieille Thielle - has been preserved to the left of the Zihl Canal . From the lower Zihl there is the first, about 2 km long section between the Bielersee and the confluence with the Nidau-Büren Canal . The Nidau-Büren Canal has replaced the remaining 7 km stretch of river up to the confluence with the Aare.
history
The construction of a navigable connection between the Rhone and the Rhine from Lake Geneva via Venoge , Canal d'Entreroches , Zihl and Aare to the point where the Aare flows into the Rhine near Koblenz , which began in the 17th century, could not be completed. The possibility of creating this Transhelvetic Canal, which was kept open for all water and road construction in Switzerland until the beginning of this century , has now been officially abandoned.
In April 2018, the renaturation of the Zihl began on a 1.8-kilometer section above Yverdon . In addition to flood protection , the focus was on creating biological diversity and using it as a recreational area .
