history

The first written mention of the place took place in the 12th century under the name Donna Lui . Numerous other spellings appeared later: Donelui (1142), Donnolui (1150), Domnolui (1157), Donneluy and Donneloia (1174), Domnelaia and Donnelue (1177), Doneliua (1214), Donnellue (1228), Donnaluy and Dogne Eluye ( 1230), Domnoloia and finally Dompneloye (1423). The place name goes back to St. Lucia, who lived in Syrakusa.

Old coat of arms of Donneloye

Donneloye had been its own rule since the 12th century; the lords of Donneloye originally came from the de Goumoëns family. After the dynasty von Donneloye died out, the rule was divided among different families and subsequently experienced numerous changes of ownership until the Loys-Villardin family brought almost all of the former rule back into their possession in 1652. In 1711 she sold her property to Bern.

With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, Donneloye came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Yverdon and from then on became the seat of a castlane court. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , the village belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Yverdon district.

At the same time as the municipality merged, the new overall municipality of Donneloye received a new coat of arms.

Attractions

The Notre-Dame church was built in the 12th century, and extensive renovations took place in 1664. The current church with its tall, slim steeple dates from 1903 and has only taken over the portal and pulpit and a bell from 1496 from the previous building. The rectory was built in 1712 and the schoolhouse in 1893. The castle of Donneloye to the south of the church, seat of the de Loys-Villardin family, dates from the 15th century and has a round tower in the garden, which was probably used as a dovecote.
