Provence is a municipality in the Jura-Nord vaudois district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .

geography

Provence lies at 778  m above sea level. M. , 14 km northeast of the district capital Yverdon-les-Bains (air line). The farming village extends on the south- eastern slope of the Soliat chain, above the valley section of the La Vaux brook , in a panoramic position around 350 m above lake level of Lake Neuchâtel .

The area of the 31.8 km² municipal area covers a section in the northeastern Vaud Jura . The area extends from the central Jura slope to the west and north to the broad ridge of the Soliat chain, which forms the north-eastern continuation of the Chasseron chain. The southern border runs in the valley of the stream La Vaux. In the west, the broad hollow in the headwaters of this stream between Mont Aubert in the south and Tête à l'Ours ( 1309  m above sea level ) and Le Truchet ( 1369  m above sea level ) in the north belongs to Provence. To the northwest of the ridge of the Soliat chain lies the Nouvelle Censière plateau , which is already in the Areuse catchment area . To the north, the municipality reaches over the summit of the Soliat (at 1,463  m above sea level, the highest elevation in Provence) to the edge of the rock arena of Creux du Van . On the ridge there are numerous sinkholes and extensive Jura high pastures with the typical mighty spruce trees , which either stand individually or in groups. In 1997, 2% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 43% for forests and woodlands and 55% for agriculture.

Provence includes the farm settlements Les Prises ( 920  m above sea level ) on the Jura slope above the village and Les Rochats ( 1164  m above sea level ) on the southern slope of the Truchet as well as numerous individual farms that are widely scattered on the Jura heights. The neighboring communities of Provence are Mutrux in the south-south-east, Concise in the south, Bonvillar in the south-south-west and Tévenon in the canton of Vaud in the south- west, and Val-de-Travers and La Grande Béroche in the canton of Neuchâtel in the north-west and north .

population

With 373 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018) Provence is one of the small communities in the canton of Vaud. 96.2% of the residents are French-speaking, 3.0% German-speaking and 0.3% Italian-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Provence was around 1000 in 1880 and 815 in 1900. After that, the village suffered a decline to 300 inhabitants due to strong emigration by 1980, since then a slight increase has been observed again.

economy

In Provence, the structure of employment is still dominated by agriculture . In the area of the village arable farming and some fruit growing are practiced , while cattle and dairy farming predominate on the Jura heights . There are other jobs in local small businesses. Since Provence has developed into a residential community in recent years, many people are employed in the larger communities along Lake Neuchâtel.

traffic

The community is located away from the major thoroughfares. The main access is from Saint-Aubin-Sauges or from Concise . A municipal road leads over the Jura ridge to Couvet in the Val de Travers . The next connection to the Autobahn 5 (Yverdon-Neuchâtel) is around 4 km from the town center. The village is connected to the public transport network by a postbus course that runs from Gorgier to Provence. At times there is also a direct route to Yverdon.

history

An early settlement of the municipal area of Provence is attested by the find of remains of iron works from the 4th to 6th centuries. The first written mention of the place took place in 1340 under the name Provency . In the following years the spellings Provincia (1359), Provence and Provencey (1378) and Provenica (1403) appeared. The place name probably goes back to the Latin proventus ( harvest , yield ).

Since the first mention of Provence, two thirds of the place belonged to the lordship of Grandson and a third to the Counts of Neuchâtel. Before 1400 the whole village came to the Lords of Grandson. After 1476 Grandson became a bailiwick under the common rule of Bern and Freiburg . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Provence belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force .

Attractions

The church, first mentioned in 1180, was destroyed by fires in 1540 and 1631. The current Reformed Church was built in 1701 and extensively restored in 1905. Some characteristic farmhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved in the town center.
