The municipality floor extends in a narrow strip from the Bois de Vuavre ( 515  m above sea level ) westward over the valley of the Mujon, the plateau and the steep Jura slope to the anticline of the Suchet . The Suchet forms with 1588  m above sea level. M. the highest point of Rances. A small part of the municipality lies west of this mountain in the catchment area of the Jougnena , a tributary of the Orbe. history

The municipality of Rances was settled very early, which is attested by finds of shell stones, settlement remains from the Bronze Age and burial mounds from the Iron Age . The place was first mentioned in writing in 973 under the name Rancias . At that time Rances belonged to the Pagus (Gau) of Yverdon in the Kingdom of Burgundy . In the Middle Ages , the place was part of the lordship of Les Clées . In 1548 almost the entire village except the church and a few surrounding houses fell victim to a conflagration.

With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, Rances became part of the Kastlanei Les Clées under the Landvogtei Yverdon. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , the village belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . It was assigned to the Orbe district in 1798.

Attractions

The church of Saint-Sulpice, first mentioned in 1228, was the most important church in Les Clées in the Middle Ages. After a partial collapse in 1820, it was largely rebuilt. The tithe barn dates from 1597. In the densely built-up town center, some typical farmhouses from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved.
