Chavornay is a municipality in the Jura-Nord vaudois district of the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .

geography

Chavornay is 452  m above sea level. M. , 4 km southeast of Orbe and 10 km southwest of the district capital Yverdon-les-Bains (linear distance). The village extends on the eastern edge of the Orbe plain , between the rivers of Talent in the south and Ruisseau de Sadaz in the north, in the Vaud Central Plateau .

The 11.1 km² municipal area covers a section of the Vaud Central Plateau. The western part of the area is taken up by the broad plain of the Orbe , which is drained by the canalized runs of the Nozon (in parts forms the western border), the Talent and the Entreroches Canal . In the plain are the former clay pits of the brickworks, which are now partly renatured, partly left to their own devices, have filled with water over time and now form ponds with significant bird populations. To the southeast, the municipality extends over the gently sloping slope in the catchment area of the Ruisseau de Sadaz brook to the edge of the plateau of the northern Gros de Vaud . In the forest Bois Désert is at 608  m above sea level. M. reached the highest point of Chavornay. In the far south, the area extends into the Tal des Talent, which is cut deep into the molasse layers of the Gros de Vaud. In 1997, 14% of the municipal area was in settlements, 16% in forests and woodlands, 66% in agriculture and a little less than 4% was unproductive land.

Chavornay includes extensive new housing estates, the court settlement Le Pâquier ( 439  m above sea level ) in the middle of the Orbe plain west of the Entreroches Canal and a few individual farms. The neighboring municipalities of Chavornay are Orbe in the west, Valeyres-sous-Rances in the north-west, Ependes in the north, Suchy in the east, Essertines-sur-Yverdon in the south-east, Vuarren and Penthéréaz in the south and Bavois and Arnex-sur-Orbe in the south-west .

population

With 5000 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Chavornay is one of the medium-sized municipalities in the canton of Vaud. 88.6% of the residents are French-speaking, 3.7% German-speaking and 2.2% Portuguese-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Chavornay was 805 in 1850 and 798 in 1900. During the 20th century the population increased slowly but continuously. Increased growth was only observed in the last few decades (only 1598 inhabitants in 1980). At the end of 2015, before the incorporation of Corcelles-sur-Chavornay and Essert-Pittet , the population was 4,162.

economy

Up until the beginning of the 20th century, Chavornay was predominantly an agricultural village. Even today arable farming (especially vegetable crops) and fruit growing have a certain importance in the income structure of the population. There are some small wine-growing areas on the south-facing slopes .

There was a mill on Talent since the 16th century. With the improved transport connections, important companies have set up shop since the end of the 19th century. The most important company used to be the Barraud brickworks, which operated from 1906 to 1966. In 1977 a large bonded warehouse was established in Chavornay . In addition, there are now numerous small and medium-sized companies, including in the areas of mechanical engineering, body construction, electrical engineering, construction and horticulture.

In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community thanks to its attractive location. Many employed people are therefore commuters who work in Orbe , in the Yverdon-les-Bains area and in the greater Lausanne area .

The community is very well developed in terms of transport. It is located on the main road from Lausanne to Orbe . The Chavornay motorway junction on the A1 (Lausanne-Yverdon) opened in 1981 is only around 1 km from the town center. On May 7, 1855, the Yverdon - Bussigny-près-Lausanne section of the Neuchâtel - Lausanne railway line (see Jura south foot line ) was inaugurated with a station in Chavornay. The branch line from Chavornay to Orbe was put into operation on April 7, 1894 by the Chemin de fer Orbe – Chavornay . The Postbus course, which runs from Chavornay to Echallens , ensures the fine distribution in public transport .

history

The remains of a settlement from Roman times as well as Roman coins and a milestone were discovered in the municipality . The first documentary mention of the place took place in 927 as in villa Cauorniaco . Later the names Cavorniacum (977), Cavornacum (1173), first Chavornay (1217), then Chauornai and Chavornai (1228), Chauornay (1453) and Chavornex (1628) appeared. The place name goes back to the probably Gallic gender name Cavorinius .

Chavornay belonged to the Kingdom of Hochburgund since the 9th century and was at times the residence of the kings. However, there are no remains of their whereabouts. In the 11th century the place came to the Bishop of Lausanne; in the 13th century, Savoy also expanded its influence on Chavornay. A noble family von Chavornay is mentioned from the 11th to the end of the 15th century. The settlement had certain freedom in the Middle Ages .

With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, Chavornay came under the administration of the Landvogtei Yverdon. It formed a château with its own court. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Chavornay belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Orbe district.

Attractions

The church, now the Reformed Parish Church of Saint-Marcel, is mentioned as early as the 12th century. The current building dates from the Middle Ages (around 1400) and has a late Gothic choir from the 15th century and a remarkable nave with a wooden ceiling and pillars, which was rebuilt from 1648 to 1671.

The Berner Haus (Maison Bernoise), which was built at the end of the 16th century, is on the main street. It got its name because of the Bernese style architecture. In the old town center there are numerous other stately town houses and farmhouses, some also in the Bernese style, which date from the 17th and 18th centuries.
