The area of the 5.7 km² municipal area covers a section of the northern Gros de Vaud, the granary of the canton of Vaud. The main part of the area is occupied by the approximately 2 km wide Penthéréaz plateau, which is 636  m above sea level. M. on the summit of the Pierramont reached its highest point. The plateau is bordered to the east by the Buron valley . In the northeast, the municipality includes the extensive Bois de Buron forest . In this forest is the nature reserve and amphibious spawning area Étang de Buron Les Biolles. To the northwest, the plateau gradually slopes down towards the Orbe plain and is drained by several source streams of the Ruisseau de Sadaz . The northern municipal boundary runs along the edge of the forest of the Bois Désert . To the west, the area extends over the valley of Cuénet to the river of the Talent , which is cut deep into the molasse layers of the Gros de Vaud. In 1997, 4% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 31% for forests and woodlands and 65% for agriculture.

Penthéréaz includes the hamlet of Champ de Vaud ( 602  m above sea level ) on the western slope of the Buron valley and several individual farms. The neighboring communities of Penthéréaz are in the east Vuarren , in the southeast Villars-le-Terroir , in the south Goumoëns , in the west Bavois , in the north Chavornay .

With 422 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Penthéréaz is one of the small communities in the canton of Vaud. 95.0% of the residents are French-speaking, 2.1% German-speaking and 1.8% Portuguese-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Penthéréaz was 279 in 1900. After the population had decreased to 212 people by 1980, a significant increase in population was recorded again.

economy

Until the second half of the 20th century, Penthéréaz was a predominantly agricultural village. Even today, arable farming (especially endive crops ), fruit growing and cattle breeding play an important role in the income structure of the population. There are other jobs in local small businesses and in the service sector. In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in Orbe and the Yverdon area .

traffic

The community is very well developed in terms of traffic, although it is located away from major thoroughfares on a connecting road from Echallens to Chavornay . The Chavornay motorway junction on the A1 (Lausanne-Yverdon) opened in 1981 is around 4 km from the town center. Penthéréaz is connected to the public transport network by a postbus course that runs from Echallens to Chavornay.

history

The first written mention of the place took place in 1141 under the name Panterea . Later, numerous other spellings appeared: Pantheroia (1154), Pantereya (1177), Panteraja (1226), Panthereya (1291), Pentherea (1403) and Panthereaz (1453). The place name probably goes back to the old French word pantiere (net for catching birds).

Since the Middle Ages , Penthéréaz has belonged to Echallen's rule. After the Burgundian Wars , the village came to the Orbe-Echallens Bailiwick in 1476 , which was under the common rule of Bern and Friborg . The village population decided in 1619 for the Protestant faith. As a result, the Catholics were initially able to stay in Penthéréaz, but in 1675, after their number had increased, they were expelled from the village by an intervention from Bern. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Penthéréaz belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then went into effect in the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Echallens district.

Attractions

Penthéréaz has a remarkable old church that dates back to the 12th century. At that time, the church was under the control of Montbenoît Abbey in France . The church has been restored and redesigned several times; today's bell tower was built in 1771. The church is now a listed building. Some characteristic farmhouses from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved in the town center, including a typical Bernese house (around 1700).
