Oppens is a municipality in the Gros-de-Vaud district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .
geography
Oppens lies at 556 m above sea level. M. , 23 km north of the canton capital Lausanne (linear distance). The clustered village extends on the western slope of the Sauteru , in the Molasse hill country of the northern Vaudois Central Plateau .
The area of the 3.6 km² large municipal area covers a section of the hill country between the Orbe plain and the Broye . The western part of the municipality is occupied by the slope of Oppens, which slopes gently towards the Sauteru and is bordered to the west and north by the valley of the Greyle . On this slope is on the Haute Fin with 665 m above sea level. M. reached the highest point of Oppens. The eastern part of the municipality includes the partially only 500 m wide plateau of Tuilière d'Oppens, which is bordered in the west by the Sauteru or its tributary Foirause , in the east by the Mentue and 597 m above sea level on the Poget corridor . M. achieved. In 1997, 4% of the municipal area was in settlements, 27% in forests and woodlands, 68% in agriculture and a little less than 1% was unproductive land.
Oppens includes the hamlet of Tuilière d'Oppens ( 560 m above sea level ) on the plateau in the eastern part of the municipality just opposite Oppens, as well as a few individual farms. The neighboring communities of Oppens are in the north-east Bioley-Magnoux , east Ogens , in the south-east Bercher , in the south Rueyres , in the south-west Pailly and in the north-west and north Orzen .
population
With 197 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018) Oppens is one of the small communities in the canton of Vaud. 84.7% of the residents are French-speaking, 10.0% Portuguese-speaking and 4.7% German-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Oppens was 257 in 1900. After the population had decreased by more than half to 120 people by 1970, an increase in population has since been registered again.
economy
Up until the second half of the 20th century, Oppens was a predominantly agricultural village. Even today arable farming , vegetable growing and fruit growing have an important role in the income structure of the population. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector, including in a metal construction company. The water power of the Sauteru was previously used by a mill and a sawmill. At Tuilière d'Oppens there was a brick factory in the 19th century . In the last few decades Oppens has also developed into a residential community. Some workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in Yverdon .
traffic
The community is located off the main thoroughfares, on a connecting road from Vuarrens to Donneloye . The Postbus course, which runs from Yverdon to Bercher , connects Oppens to the public transport network. The bus route from Bercher to Thierrens also serves the hamlet of Tuilière d'Oppens.
history
The first written mention of the place took place in 1163 under the name Opens , in 1224 the name Oupeins appeared . The place name goes back to the Burgundian personal name Audebad and means for the people of Audebad .
Since the Middle Ages , Oppens has belonged to the Bioley-Magnoux dominion. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Yverdon . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Oppens belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Yverdon district.
Attractions
In the town center there are some typical farmhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries and a stately schoolhouse with a bell tower. Oppens does not have its own church, it belongs to the parish of Orzens .
