Sugnens was a municipality in the Gros-de-Vaud district of the canton of Vaud in Switzerland . On July 1, 2011, Sugnens merged with the municipalities of Dommartin , Naz and Poliez-le-Grand to form the new municipality of Montilliez .

geography

Sugnens lies at 672  m above sea level. M. , three kilometers east-northeast of Echallens and 15 kilometers north of the canton capital of Lausanne (as the crow flies). The clustered village extends on a slope inclined to the northwest on the northern roof of the heights of the Jorat , in the Gros de Vaud , in the Vaudois Central Plateau .

The area of ​​the 2.7 km² former municipal area covers a section of the gently undulating high plateau of the Gros de Vaud, the granary of the canton of Vaud. The main part of the area is occupied by the ridge of Sugnens, which is 694  m above sea level in the Bois Dessus forest south of the village . M. reaches the highest point. In the east the valley of the Botterel , a side stream of the Mentue , forms the border. To the west, the parish extends into the Gros de Vaud plain northeast of Echallens. The headwaters of the Sauteru are located southwest of the village . In 1997, 8% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 24% by forests and woodlands and 68% by agriculture.

The hamlet of Pré Morex ( 671  m above sea level ) north of the village and some individual farms belonged to the municipality of Sugnens . The neighboring communities of Sugnens were Fey , Naz , Poliez-le-Grand and Villars-le-Terroir .

With 308 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2010) Sugnens was one of the small communities in the canton of Vaud. 93.6% of the residents are French-speaking, 3.0% German-speaking and 1.3% Italian-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Sugnens was 199 inhabitants in 1900. After the population had decreased to 155 people by 1980, a significant increase in population was recorded again.

economy

Sugnens was a predominantly agricultural village until the second half of the 20th century . Even today, arable farming and cattle breeding play an important role in the income structure of the population. There are other jobs in local small businesses and in the service sector. In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in Echallens and the greater Lausanne area .

traffic

Sugnens is away from major thoroughfares, but has good connections with the neighboring villages. On November 24, 1898, the Echallens - Bercher section of the Chemin de fer Lausanne-Echallens-Bercher (LEB) narrow-gauge railway with a station at Sugnens was put into operation.

history

The place was first mentioned in 1177 under the current name Sugnens . Later, the names Sunens (1203), Suneins (1225), Sugneins (1238) and Sugnyens (1453) appeared. The place name goes back to the Burgundian personal name Sunia and means for the people of Sunia .

Since the Middle Ages Sugnens belonged to the dominion of Dommartin , which was subordinate to the Lausanne cathedral chapter. The Montheron Abbey also owned goods in the municipality of Sugnens. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of Kastlanei Dommartin, an exclave in the Bailiwick of Lausanne . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Sugnens belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Echallens district.

Attractions

The Reformed Church of Sugnens was built in 1686.
