Poliez-Pittet is a municipality in the Gros-de-Vaud district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .

geography

Poliez-Pittet is 743  m above sea level. M. , 4 km east- south- east of Echallens and 12 km north-northeast of the canton capital Lausanne (linear distance). The clustered village extends on a terrace on the northern roof of the heights of the Jorat , in the eastern Gros de Vaud , in the Vaud Central Plateau .

The area of ​​the communal area of ​​5.0 km² covers a section of the higher Vaud Central Plateau. The community soil extends from the valley of the Coruz brook to the southeast over the slope of Poliez-Pittet and the Bois Conti hill ( 834  m above sea level ). The eastern border runs along the upper reaches of the Mentue . The area extends in a narrow strip in the southeast into the extensive forests of the Jorat and reaches on the Mont des Lex with 852  m above sea level. M. the highest point of Poliez-Pittet. In 1997, 7% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 37% for forests and woodlands and 56% for agriculture.

With 847 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Poliez-Pittet is one of the smaller communities in the canton of Vaud. 95.2% of the residents are French-speaking, 1.8% German-speaking and 1.1% Portuguese-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Poliez-Pittet was 347 in 1900. After the population had decreased to 289 people by 1970, a significant increase in population was recorded again, with the number of inhabitants doubling within 30 years.

economy

Until the second half of the 20th century, Poliez-Pittet was predominantly an agricultural village. Even today, arable farming and cattle breeding play an important role in the income structure of the population. There are other jobs in local small businesses and in the service sector. In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in Echallens and the greater Lausanne area .

The community is very well developed in terms of traffic, although it is located away from major thoroughfares. The connecting road from Lausanne to Thierrens runs around 1 km from the town center. The Postbus courses that run from Echallens and Froideville to Thierrens connect Poliez-Pittet to the public transport network.

history

Significant remains from Roman times have been discovered in the municipality of Poliez-Pittet , including the foundations of a Roman villa. Several statuettes (including a bronze Venus) were found in the ground. The place was first mentioned in a document in 1230 under the name Pollie lo pitet . The place name goes back to the Roman personal name Pollius .

In the Middle Ages, Poliez-Pittet probably formed a common territory with Poliez-le-Grand , which was subordinate to the Lords of Bottens. Later there were several changes of ownership. After the Burgundian Wars , Poliez-Pittet came to the Orbe-Echallens Bailiwick in 1476 , which was under the common rule of Bern and Freiburg . The church was used by followers of both denominations after the introduction of the Reformation . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , the village belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Echallens district.

Attractions

Poliez-Pittet today has two churches: the Catholic church Sainte-Marie-Madeleine was built in 1914, the Reformed parish church around 1920. In the center of the village is the Turlet clock tower, built in 1780.
