Rueyres is a municipality in the Gros-de-Vaud district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .
geography
Rueyres is 619 m above sea level. M. , 20 km north of the canton capital Lausanne (linear distance). The clustered village extends over a plateau of the north-eastern Gros de Vaud , east of the Sauteru valley , in the Vaud Central Plateau .
The 2.0 km² municipal area covers a section of the Gros de Vaud plateau, the granary of the canton of Vaud. The Rueyres plateau has an average altitude of 610 m above sea level. M. , the highest point is at 621 m above sea level. M. in the middle of the village. The western boundary of the municipality marks the valley of the Sauteru, a tributary of the Mentue, cut into the molasse layers of the Gros de Vaud . In the east, the border is formed by the Foirause brook, which initially flows on the plateau and further north in a valley . The Rueyres plateau therefore ends in a pointed protrusion to the north over the confluence of the Foirause and the Sauteru. In 1997, 8% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 19% for forests and woodlands and 73% for agriculture.
The neighboring communities of Rueyres are Bercher in the east, Fey in the south, Pailly in the west and Oppen in the north .
population
With 254 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Rueyres is one of the small communities in the canton of Vaud. 93.9% of the residents are French-speaking, 4.6% German-speaking and 1.0% Portuguese-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Rueyres was 220 in 1850 and 240 in 1900. After the population had decreased to 117 people by 1970, a significant increase in population was recorded again with almost doubling the number of inhabitants within 30 years.
economy
Until the second half of the 20th century, Rueyres was a predominantly agricultural village. Even today, arable farming and cattle breeding play an important role in the income structure of the population. There are other jobs in local small businesses and in the service sector. At Rueyres there is a large wood storage area. In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in Echallens and in the Yverdon area .
traffic
The community is located away from major thoroughfares on a connecting road from Essertines-sur-Yverdon to Bercher . Rueyres is connected to the public transport network by a postbus course that runs from Yverdon to Bercher.
history
The first written mention of the place took place in 1177 under the name Rueria . Later the names Ruvoeri (1228), en Ruere (1288) and Ruveri , Riuori and Ravoire appeared . The place name is derived from the Latin word roboretum (oak grove).
Since the Middle Ages, Rueyres was under the lords of Bercher, who in turn were vassals of the lords of Cossonay. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Yverdon . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Rueyres belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Echallens district.
Attractions
Rueyres church was rebuilt in 1738. In the town center there are some typical farmhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries.
