Naz was a municipality in the Gros-de-Vaud district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland . On July 1, 2011, Naz merged with the municipalities of Dommartin , Poliez-le-Grand and Sugnens to form the new municipality of Montilliez .

Naz lies at 675 m above sea level. M. , five kilometers east-northeast of Echallens and 17 kilometers north-northeast of the canton capital of Lausanne (as the crow flies). The farming village extends on a small plateau in the north-eastern Gros de Vaud , west of the Mentue valley , in the Vaud Central Plateau .
The area of the former municipal area, which is just 1.2 km² in size, covers a section of the Vaud Central Plateau. The Naz plateau at an average altitude of 665 m above sea level. M. and with an area of around 1 km² is bordered in the east by the Mentue, in the southeast by its side stream Coruz and in the west by the Botterel , also a side stream of the Mentue. All these rivers have dug valleys around 30 to 50 m deep into the molasse layers of the high plateau. The highest elevation of Naz is 688 m above sea level. M. on the hill Bugnon . In 1997, 6% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 23% for forests and woodlands and 71% for agriculture.

With 137 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2010), Naz was one of the smallest communities in the canton of Vaud. 95.6% of the residents are French-speaking and 4.4% German-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Naz was 98 in 1850 and 77 in 1900. After the population had decreased to 54 people by 1980, a significant increase in population was recorded again.

Naz still lives from agriculture , especially from agriculture and cattle breeding . In the valley of the Mentue below Naz there was a brick factory from the 18th to the beginning of the 20th century . Outside the primary sector there are only a few jobs in the village today.

history
The place was first mentioned in 1213 under the name Nars , in 1216 the spelling Nas appeared . The place name goes back to the Latin word nasum (nose) and describes a place that lies on a ledge.
From the Middle Ages Naz belonged to Dommartin, which was under the cathedral chapter of Lausanne. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of Kastlanei Dommartin, an exclave in the Bailiwick of Lausanne . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Naz belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Echallens district. In 1983 and 1984, fires caused severe damage. Naz does not have its own church, it belongs to the parish of Dommartin .
The place has recently become famous for the fact that two suspects of the attacks on the World Trade Center were arrested there by Interpol in 2002 and 2004.
