Until the middle of the 20th century, Thierrens was a predominantly agricultural village. Even today, arable farming , fruit growing and animal husbandry have a certain importance in the income structure of the population. Since the 1950s, several craft and service companies, including a medical care center, have settled in Thierrens. With the construction of single-family houses in the last few decades, the village has also developed into a residential community. Some workers are therefore commuters, some of whom drive to work as far as Moudon, Lausanne and Yverdon-les-Bains .

As an important crossing point, Thierrens is connected to the public transport network by postbus courses to Moudon, Yverdon, Echallens , Bercher and Froideville .

history

The municipality of Thierrens was already settled in the Bronze Age. During the Roman era a road ran through what is now Thierrens. The place was first mentioned in a document at the beginning of the 11th century under the name Teoderinco . The names Tierens (around 1150), Tyerens and Thyerens (1154), Tierrens , Thyerrens (1228) and Tierreins (1238) appeared later . The place name goes back to the Burgundian proper name Þeudar (Theudarius) and means for the people of Þeudar .

In the Middle Ages, Thierrens belonged to the Belmont rule , which was under the Lords of Grandson. In 1229 the village came to the Lausanne cathedral chapter. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, Thierrens came under the administration of the Moudon Bailiwick .

The Thierrens incident on January 25, 1798 was the reason for the invasion of the French troops in Switzerland and helped the Vaud revolution to break out. In January 1798, General Philippe Romain Ménard , who commanded the French troops in the Pays de Gex , had promised Vaud his support in the revolution against the Bernese lords. Ménard sent his adjutant Autier to General Weiss, the head of the Bernese troops, in Yverdon to ask him to leave the Vaud region. Autier and his followers, including two French cavalry soldiers, moved to Yverdon via Lausanne and Moudon. When he came to Thierrens late in the evening on January 25th, a quarrel broke out with the villagers who had gathered for a possible defense. In the course of the conflict the two cavalry soldiers from France were killed. General Ménard saw this as a violation of international law and took the incident as the occasion for his invasion of Switzerland on January 28, 1798.

After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Thierrens belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic , which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Moudon district.
