Villars-Mendraz was a municipality in the Gros-de-Vaud district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland . Villars-Mendraz merged on July 1, 2011 with the municipalities of Montaubion-Chardonney , Peney-le-Jorat , Sottens and Villars-Tiercelin to form the new municipality of Jorat-Menthue .

Villars-Mendraz lies at 774  m above sea level. M. , 15 kilometers northeast of the canton capital Lausanne (linear distance ). The small clustered village extends on the southern edge of a wide plateau, which connects to the heights of the Jorat in the north , in the Molasse hill country of the Vaudois Plateau .

The area of ​​the 1.6 km² former municipal area comprises a section of the high plateau between the Mentue and the central Broyetal . The south-eastern border runs along the Ruisseau de Neyrevaux brook , which flows in a small valley. The northern and eastern parts of the municipality are located on the plateau in the headwaters of the Mérine , a left tributary of the Broye. To the south-west, the municipality extends to the forest heights of Les Tailles and reaches here at 851  m above sea level. M. on the north face of the Jorat the highest point of Villars-Mendraz. In 1997, 8% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 18% for forests and woodlands and 74% for agriculture.

Several individual farms belonged to the municipality of Villars-Mendraz. Villars-Mendraz's neighboring communities were Sottens , Peney-le-Jorat and Montaubion-Chardonney .

With 193 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2010) Villars-Mendraz was one of the small communities in the canton of Vaud. 94.7% of the residents are French-speaking, 3.2% German-speaking and 1.1% Portuguese-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Villars-Mendraz was 137 in 1900. Thereafter, a decrease to 84 inhabitants was recorded by 1970 due to strong emigration; since then the population has increased significantly again.

economy

Until the middle of the 20th century, Villars-Mendraz was predominantly an agricultural village. Even today, arable farming , fruit growing and cattle breeding play an important role in the income structure of the population. Other jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector, including in a psychogeriatric home. With the construction of single-family houses in the last few decades, the village has also developed into a residential community. Some workers are therefore commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

Villars-Mendraz is located off the main thoroughfares on a connecting road from Saint-Cierges to Peney-le-Jorat . The village is connected to the public transport network by the bus routes that run from Moudon via Villars-Mendraz to Thierrens and from Thierrens to Froideville .

history

The first written mention of the place took place in 1235 under the name Vilar Mundri ; In 1450 the name Villarmendra appeared . The place name developed from the Latin words villa Munderici (House of Munderic ).

In the Middle Ages, the Benedictine priory of Lutry and the Cistercian Abbey of Haut-Crêt owned real estate in the municipality . Later the village came to the Savoy Bailiwick of Moudon. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, Villars-Mendraz came under the administration of the Moudon bailiffs . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , the village belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic , which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Moudon district.
